5 out of 5 stars Overall a really great game   September 4, 2008

This game was deffinately worth my time and money. The gameplay was extremely long. There were two or three points where they easily could have stopped the game but, instead, kept the story going. While there are many similarities to Zelda, this game is deffinately unique enough to stand on its own.

The only bad things I have to say are that the bosses were sometimes too easy, you were given too many hints on how to solve puzzles, and the dialog went on at times for way too long.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular, fun, and original game.   August 2, 2008

I'm about half-way through this game (missed it in it's original form on ps2 as I never had one) and I'd seriously have gladly paid more than $50 for the wonder, joy, and fun I've had so far in my 25 hours of play.

This is a fantastic game with art, style, controls, ideas, and goals like nothing you've ever seen before. The artwork is incredible -- like a living, breathing Japanese watercolor scroll. The action is exciting and challenging, but at the same time "wholesome" and "family-friendly" as you restore nature to a bleak landscape while befriending and feeding wildlife. It may sound pansied-down, but it's really not -- they somehow make it simultaneously challenging, exciting, wholesome, and rewarding all at the same time. It's more "extreme" than any game I've played with "extreme" in its title!

I claim that this combination has never been achieved in any game without "Mario" in the title ever in the history of video games. I may be wrong and forgetting one or two, but there can't be many that are this awesome, and certainly no others have this incredible -- almost museum-quality -- artwork.

If you have a wii (or even a ps2) buy this game no matter what the age or interests of the potential players. Everyone can play, and will love, Okami.

5 out of 5 stars Japanese Mythology and Art brought to life   July 31, 2008

While few have likely played this game, far less than the PS2 version, a lot of good things can be said about Ookami, or Ôkami as printed upon the box. First, it is a solid adventure, taking the player through a sort of version of ancient Japan. Demons and beasts from Japanese Mythos confront the player often, and the battle style is often fast paced and lively.
The Wii version could easily be called a little more difficult to play at first, with the combination attacks on the WiiMote made a bit harder to time. The use of the pointer on the Mote, however, often makes drawing a little easier, though a steady hand could be more helpful. Overall, this port is an excellent transition, and makes a great addition to any adventurer's library.

4 out of 5 stars I can't love it more   July 14, 2008

I have not been able to put this one down! The Wii was a perfect choice for the re-release of Okami. This game looks great and plays very well. The brush can be a bit temperamental at times but that has not been a huge thing for me.

If you want fun then go for this one!

4 out of 5 stars very good, but not quite great   July 12, 2008

I really wanted to like this game. Having been a huge fan of Zelda Twilight Princess on the Wii, and of this genre of games in general, I had high hopes for Wii Okami. And it really does have its moments that lived up to expectations. But it simply runs out of steam towards the end. The story gets too convoluted, and the final boss is RIDICULOUS in the LAME sense of the word. I don't want to write any spoilers, but that thing was just plain dumb. In fact, Im still not really sure what it was supposed to represent. The end of the game felt rushed and forced.

Still, there's lots to love here. Lots of gameplay, and some truly unique artwork and ideas (eg the brush). Clearly, this game is inspired by Zelda, and it did get a lot of those things right. But other things were kinda dumb and unnecessary.... for example, it's always great to find chests, but it gets old when there are WAY too many of them, and they all contain kinda lame treasures. You would have to have a LOT of spare time to actually track down all of the stray beads and trinkets (incense burners, whatevers). Feeding the animals is a cool idea, but why not have some type of reward once you feed ALL of a particular type?

I guess this review might come across as more negative than I had planned because the ending was a pretty big letdown, and I just completed it. But overall, this is a very good game for this genre. So if you've already played Twilight Princess, and you're into these types of games, you should definitely give Okami a try on the Wii.

On a final note, the reviewers who claim that this game is easy are on the mark. There's too much hand-holding, and I don't recall a single boss that I didn't defeat on my first attempt. But the puzzles, the artwork, and just the creative use of the brush interactions still kept things interesting throughout.
