When the first Mario game came out for the NES, your goal was to rescue the princess from bowser--an evil, fire-breathing turtle/dragon boss.
A little more than a decade later, and Mario is running around watering plants and hosing off sidewalks. What the heck happened?
In all seriousness, this game is extremely disappointing. The graphics in this game are almost no improvement over its N64 predecessor, and the controls are sloppier and more frustrating (the water pump controls are very awkward and take a lot of getting used to.) On top of that, the camera behavior has become even more irritating than before. It's not uncommon for the camera to swing around behind a wall and make it difficult to see what the heck you're doing. You'll find yourself adjusting the camera very often, which isn't exactly my idea of fun.
The overall look and feel of the game is strange. Many of the levels look basically the same, the enemies lack creativity, and the music is just bad.
On the plus side, the game does have its moments. Some of the bosses are fun... that's pretty much it.
If you are a big fan of the Mario games, I'd get this just because it's cheap and is a good back-up game for when you get tired of the really good ones (like Super Smash Bros. Melee.) However, if you're expecting this to be a step above and beyond Super Mario 64, you're in for a disappointment.

I am really glad that gamecube games work on the Wii. You can buy a bunch of cheap used discs at your local gamestop as well as a used controller memory and you're good to go since it all works with the Wii with no downloads necessary. I absolutely love this game, and it is definitely a huge improvement on Mario 64 which was already a great game. The graphics are wonderful and it's just a lot of fun. Enjoy.

I remember reading about this game that was in progress when Mario 64 was released and sure enough this game was it.I think that at times this game can be very fun..ONCE YOU START PROGRESSING. It can be very rough at times. YES! I admit using my handy dandy game guide to get me through but even with a game guide you still get so confused. It gets confusing when certain cut scences that were suppose to happening after a certain amount of stars happens later on in the game or you just so happen to run in section were something takes place. I can not stress enough how the graphics in this game are so prestine and real I love it! I think once I get use to everything will I understand more but I will rate this game 4 stars.

SMS is definitely a gorgeous game to look at and a perfect game to get you in a summertime mood. The perfect blue skies, glorious sunshine and beautiful water effects make you just want to pass through the screen and into the Isle of Delfino in the game itself. Mario vacations in this sunny resort only to find it's covered in pollution when he arrives. So now it's up to him to clean it up across the various levels and worlds.
It's one of those games that you can just keep on playing over the years and even put aside for a while before going back to it. It doesn't really have the same charm in the winter months however. The music, the graphics, the humor are all cute and colorful. It makes for perfect escapism.
However, the designers have simply tried to cram in too many controls on the Gamecube pad and, as a result, it's a very hard game to control. Many levels and missions require precision manoeuvring and can often take several minutes of painstaking balance and ascension only for it all to be undone, as Mario plummets several hundred feet, by a tiny little flaw in your button-bashing. It will seriously drive you C-R-A-Z-Y.
Had it not been for this, I would probably have stuck with SMS to the end, but I had to just be done with it once and for all, otherwise I would have chucked my Gamecube at the wall.

This game serves as an example of different ways that Mario can be used as a title character in a game. Some might think the idea of Mario running around an island cleaning up a mess might be ridiculous... that's because it is. However, there is alot of fun in doing it. You get alot of free reign and are able to roam everywhere.
