Holds up today January 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ive recently started playing this game again-I had a disc that needed to be cleaned and never got around to it.Im glad I finally did.
You know by now that you will hate the controls until you master basic movement. But honestly the rest of the controls are so simple, it doesnt take you away from what you should be doing, soaking up the atmosphere. And this is one of the few games that can make you feel like your in a creepy old mansion. The look and feel of this game is the highest level possible, and to this day looks beautiful. In a blood splattered, broken window way.
If theres one thing ugly about the game, its the puzzles. But they need to be.You need to get lost in the mansion for a bit to get the mood right.Running through areas and taking damage and then realizing that you didnt need to be there until another hour or so can stress you out, while remembering key locations and making it back and forth is rewarding and really has hooked me on this game.I usually try not to play the longer games nowadays because of long work hours, but if you have a few hours to yourself you can get pretty far once your in the groove.
My local Gamestop has about three copies of this in stock right now for cheap prices. The site your on now has quite a few too.If you have a wii or a gamecube, you might want to check this out.Who its not for-- People with little free time, people who need fast paced shooting action, and children. I say children because besides the obvious reasons of gore, the game itself will be too hard for them to get anything but frustration out of it.Its not actually "fun" in the sense that you are enjoying every moment. Its a creepy whats going to happen next film that you control, and if thats what you want, this is great.
Resident Evil PC Game Review January 9, 2008 Although I have not personally played this particular game, I gave it as a Christmas Present to my brother who is an avid gamer. He reports the game is "excellent" and is providing many hours of gaming enjoyment.
Very Good December 23, 2007 I played Resident Evil 2 when I was a little kid and I was scared of it lol. I got Resident Evil 4 for the Wii and got hooked so I figured I would get the back story to the game too and I love them all!!!
Great remake of a masterpiece December 7, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
At first I thought that this was just a port with a complete graphic overhaul, and from reading the back of the case, it explains that there's new areas to explore, which struck me with the fact that they added a few new areas here and there, and it probably wouldn't be any harder than the original...
wrong.
If you've played the original and think that this will be just like it, don't, it's nothing like the original. I'll make a comparrison of the added features, to hopefully persuade you into buying this wonderful game.
1: New areas: And they don't take a few minutes to explore either. Even a vetran RE fan would be surprised of the new locations.
2: New enemies: Such as Lisa Trevor, (a very grotesque, and bothersome enemy, much in the vain of Nemesis) And Crimson Head's (if you don't burn a dispatched Zombie, it'll reactivate, with advanced aggression and the ability to run.
3: A self defense feature (meaning if you get grabbed by a zombie and have a dagger, you'll stick it in it's head)
4: A new soundtrack. While not as prominant as the soundtrack in the original game, this one is a little more moody.
5: The scare factor is amped way up from the original. The mansion in the original had lighteing in every area you visited, this on the other hand is very dark most of the time. And the lighteing effects are put to great use, for example, you can be walking down one of many dark corridors, and then out of nowhere lightning will strike illuminating the room for a couple seconds, which is very effective if you see an enemy that you couldn't see in the dark. Not as enjoyable as the original (I'm very biased towards it) but it's a quality remake. Will most definitely appeal to people who think graphics are the most important feature in a game.
Put RE4 away, and play some of the older titles for a change, you MIGHT just like them.
My favorite of the series December 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
To be perfectly honest, I'm not a big fan of the "survivor horror" genre. Most of the time, as is the case with Fatal Frame or Silent Hill, the games are great to watch but not as fun to play. Originally the Resident Evil series was like that for me but for some reason the stories (as B-movie as they are) and the characters appealed to me way more than the others in the genre. Released way back when, the original game was an alright play but it wasn't as scary as some would say but now with the power of the Gamecube and a near overhaul of much of the gameplay, the remake is quite the scarefest and a good game.
Story: The S.T.A.R.S. Bravo Team was sent in to the Arklay Mountains outside of Raccoon City to investigate strange murders with evidence of cannibalism. But contact was lost and the Alpha team, which features members Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, find their downed helicopter. But no sooner do they arrive are they attacked by ravenous dogs and have to escape into a nearby mansion but turns out the mansion has its own dangers as well.
Graphics: The old Playstation games looked jaggy and almost looked flat as far as atmospherics goes. The Gamecube makes it more ambient and creepy with minimal lighting except from candlelight, lightning flashes or a few lightbulbs. Not only that but characters are way more detailed and look quite photorealistic and while movements still look occasionally stiff, the animation has vastly improved.
Sound/Music: Anyone who's played any and all Resident Evil games knows the voice acting leaves a lot to be desired. Changing some of the lines (while still rewording some of the more "classic" lines) and awkward conversation, the remake isn't quite perfect but it's a step-up. The actors have a more serious tone now and while occasionally campy, it's not as awful as before. The music as well adds to the atmosphere which has creepy ambiance and more serene music, such as the Save Room music, while other times the music will drop completely.
Gameplay: Along with its voice acting, the other notable complaint has been its control scheme. To put it simply: regardless of where your character is facing, push Up to move them forward, Down to back them up and Left and Right to turn. It only took about 15 minutes for me to get used to it and while at times characters might reclimb a set of stairs or zigzag across the room, you'll eventually get used to it although you might wish something akin to 3D controls were used. And anyone wondering about its puzzles, they're still here; as non-sensical as they are vague at times. Who'd really put strange keys and oddball ways of opening doors in a mansion you're going to be in constantly? But luckily, the puzzles can be solved by just exploring and in many cases, you'll find yourself locked out of a room and while at first unsure, eventually you'll go "hey wait, isn't there that one room I didn't explore yet?"
As far as the difficulty, the game is just as trying as the series has been, if not more so, with normal zombies requiring near half a clip to bring them down while others require more firepower. Ammo conservation is the key here like all the series but then again, you have enemies like the full-gallop Crimson Heads (zombies who reanimate if you don't decapitate them or burn them using flamethrowers, flame rounds or a fuel canteen/lighter combo) and with sharp claws, these guys can be a pain. Plus with big creatures like the leaping Hunters, giant spiders, annoying bugs and birds in addition to the huge bosses, this trip through the mansion won't be an easy one.
But something strange happens when you play: you just want to keep playing. Even though it can get frustrating when you die and re-try all the time (Devil May Cry 3, I'm definately pointing at you), the mansion and all its wonders and horrors almost call to you and there's something almost addicting and with the series staples of having speed runs and new modes such as Invisible Enemy mode as well as the option to play as either Chris, who hangs out with Wesker and Rebecca Chambers who starred in Resident Evil Zero and Jill who hangs out with Barry, the originator of the "Jill Sandwich" line (that only gets improved a little bit, in other words, he still says the word "sandwich") there's a lot to get through.
While the original had more a stillness then creep factor, this game amps up the tension and is quite fun and spooky to play and is one of the best of the series as well as the Gamecube.
