 Why I love my ASUS Eee PC 900 20g (8.9 inch Display) July 17, 2008

First..thanks to everyone that wrote a review, it helped in my purchasing decision. I chose this laptop for a number of reasons:
My Toshiba Satellite of about 4 yrs died in the middle of a final paper for class.
My sister purchased a HP laptop that came pre-installed with Vista (hated it!!)
My daughter has a macbook and we love it!!
Finally - I wanted to try out Linux and I wanted a smaller subnotebook, after lugging around a 15 inch toshiba...it was time for a change!
I researched this baby for about 3 months. Everyday..reading reviews, calling my fellow techie friends asking their input..finally I realized no one could talk me out of buying my baby mac..(that is what I called it)..of course like some people I had a great justification for purchasing my new toy...well..its a graduation gift to me from me, and well..um..I wanted to get macbook, but this is MUCH cheaper...and most important..I wanted to try out Linux ..thanks to GWBush - I bought it!!!
The keyboard is small, but hey, like anything in life, I got use to it...I have read lot of complaints about users with the XP version..hmm..HELLO..MICROSOFT!!! I am so quickly moving away from XP to Linux! Besides I am a google user - I typed all of my papers in google documents...I love Mozilla...so..yes I love my new toy...I just drop it into my bag - yes I am a woman that carries a big bag so this is perfect.
I am able to watch streaming videos on youtube and my online movie sites...listen to streaming music - just hook it up to my speakers...hey..my own stereo system!!
My advice - dont use XP - go with Linux!!

Asus like made this unit as a hold over til the atom models where released. It is a bigger version of the 701. I thought the quality was not as good as the 701. The power cord kept falling out. The unit used more battery. Spend a little more and get the atom processor. I returned this unit, faulty charging is not a good for a laptop. The battery was not holding a charge either

Update July 29, 2008:
Exchanged my Asus Eee PC 900. If you read my stuff below you'll see the problems I encountered. Because it was within 14 days of purchasing my Eee PC Best Buy just did an Exchange, very easy. I opted NOT to have them optimize it which I think was a good decision. I think I either had a lemon or their optimization caused some issues. On the old one some of the Fn functions did not work: Toggling, WiFi on and off, Volume Control and Mute. What I said below about installing iTunes to the correct drive may not be true. I'm not seeing a second hard drive, logical or physical. The last straw was when I attempted the Recovery (following the iTunes fiasco) I got an error: Bad Block(s) Encountered During Read. Could be a small problem or a big one but whatever it was I got a brand new Asus Eee PC 900 from Best Buy and set it up myself. I've got Verizon Wireless Broadband installed on the new Eee and it's working great.
Initial Review:
I can understand why one of the reviewers was disappointed with his Asus eee 900. I got mine at Best Buy for $[...] and a trimmed down version of Windows XP Home was pre-installed. It cannot handle Vista or a full version of XP and especially XP Pro. I also won't be adding MS Office products. If I need to work on something like that I will use the pre-installed Star Office or Works and save it in the appropriate format. For my needs, surfing the net at starbucks, etc. it will work great. I was also able to install VZAccess Manager and connect to Verizon Broadband with my USB720 modem. It has 3 USB Ports which is great, more than I expected. The speakers work great. Sound better than my Gateway Solo laptop. I used my iPod to transfer files like VZAccess Manager exe to the Asus. I'm on the road and forgot to bring a USB Stick. Also it comes with a nice padded sleeve although the small power supply/cord will not fit in that. A ZDNet review says the battery will last 3+ hours and that's with playing a DVD (external drive). That would be great on an airplane. I wish they had internet access on the plane :b...
Update - July 23, 2008:
I have the Eee PC 900 with XP and decided to install iTunes in order to add a few of my songs from my iPod. (Not the whole library.) The install went fine and the computer restarted without a hitch. When I tried to open iTunes it ran thru some configuration set up and ended with an error message about a 'bad shortcut'. Next I got a taskbar pop up message about a memory location error (ewww). I tried to remove iTunes but got an error about not enough space (ewww). I shut it down and later tried to boot it back up: Disk Error (Ctrl + Alt + Del). Just an infinite cycle there. My Recovery Disk is 200 miles away so I'll have to wait till I get back home to fix. I am guessing that will take it back to factory settings(???)
Yes I would still get this UMPC. I'd love to wait around for the 901 or 1000 but that's life isn't it. My advice is to always Google before you install anything to see what others have learned. There is info and recommendations about installing iTunes on the Eee PC, if only I'd done my homework.
Adding RAM and the Warranty. While on the phone with Asus I asked about adding RAM and voiding the Warranty. He stated that it would not void the warrany as long as I replaced the original RAM before sending my Eee PC back to Asus. I don't have our conversation recorded or notarized but for what it's worth....

Even though my Dell 600m is supposed to be "lightweight" at 5 pounds, taking it anywhere was a pain. With other items along, that bag became a real presence and a burden. So it often didn't travel with me.
Not so this little guy. It even comes along on an evening out. I have actually had to check my bag to be sure it is there.
I returned my first 900 20G because the 'E' key was not as responsive and needed a stronger tap. Many errors resulted. Even then I hated sending it back because I was so enjoying it. Quick and easy replacement process with DataViz.
The pros: Portability #1. Also that Linux is so clean and pure. I had never used Linux and was a little worried about adapting to it (I am, er, older), but it is straight forward. I love that it powers down in about 3 or 4 seconds, whereas the 600m takes forever. Similarly it powers up much faster than the 600m. Happy to live without all the 'bloatware' and virus risks. Screen is bright, large enough for my needs. Excellent Internet hot spot reception.
The cons: You know by now the keyboard is small. Battery life is this side of 3 hours (haven't run this one down yet). And it gets warm. I would add that Linux has the downside of not being compatible with Windows based programs. There are a couple things I use (e.g.Quicken) that I'd run also on my laptop. Tough call here. I debated, chose the 20G, then around the replacement/return, debated again and still went with the 20G. I use a Treo for my very mobile needs (recipes, lists, contacts, scheduling, etc) and keep all that backed up on the desktop. I ALWAYS have the Treo with me, so I don't need all that on the mobile Eeee. I will back up Quicken elsewhere. I can opt to install Windows or Windows lite if this incompatibility bothers me later. For now I am liking Linux.
I have run into one insurmountable compatibility problem around a mapping project. A solution workable with Treo Palm OS, Eee Linux, desktop Windows and my GPS unit appears beyond my capabilities. I can live with that, same as with the lack of Quicken backup.
Last, why not the 901? Well, the Atom is unproven, and I am cynical and wary of first generation efforts. Also the 901 weight is inching up there a bit. Why not the Wind? Processor and weight again - to me every ounce matters. And the Wind weight appears to be with the 3 cell battery.
I'm traveling this weekend and again for 3 weeks in September. No question the Eee is going along. I will have my files, photos, music, email, Skype and Internet all right there, trouble free, for under 2 pounds. Wonderful!

The asus eee is light has enough power for the OS that comes with it. It lacks the required flexibility for hardcore users. There are several online resources to successfully install windows xp or ubuntu.
The hardware is really good in the sense that you get a lot considering the price.
The keyboard is for small sized hands. ofcourse after using it for quite some time, i eventually got used to the size of the keyboard.
