1 out of 5 stars lousy customer service   October 24, 2008

Based on the recommendation of a couple of friends whose opinions I valued I purchased a Kindle particularly for a planned trip to Europe. The biggest draw for me was not having to carry 40 pounds of books with me. On the flight to New York the lady in the window seat asked to be allowed to go to the bathroom. I, of course, gallantly arose and as I did so my new Kindle slide out of the Amazon provided case (as nothing fastens the Kindle to the case) and it fell about 18 inches to the aisle. Upon retreiving my beloved Kindle I found it inoperable and nonfunctional. Fortunately I was able to buy 40 pounds of books at JFK and went on to Europe. Upon my return this week I called the so called Customer Service number and was told that the product warranty did not cover my Kindle but that Amazon out of pure generosity would sell me a remanufactured product for only $180.00. I was incredulous. A poorly designed case and a poorly designed product that cannot withstand modest jarring will not be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer? This is probably the worst customer service policy I have ever experienced and I plan to tell everyone I know and can reach on the internet what a crummy product and lousy service policy Amazon his foisted on the public. I'm done buying books from them too. Larry Luke (lukeatlaw@gmail.com if anyone woudl like to share a similar story)

I like the fact that kindle has a cover but it needs to be made better to hold the kindle, after one week of use the inside holder part broke off.

1 out of 5 stars Kindle Cover Sucks   October 12, 2008

Listen I love my overpriced Kindle, but I am ticked off EVERYTIME I use it when I see the junk that Amazon threw on at the last minute on the Kindle and call it a cover. It is flimsy, it does not stand up to average use of Kindle - which in my case is not even every day but rather several times a week. I have had my Kindle for a few months and the flimsy cardboard bracket for the cover has broken. Honestly Amazon the cover makes me feel like you were just out for the money for the Kindle and as an afterthought or to cut cost you figured okay we'll cut cost with the cover. I really am ticked off about this because I feel like the cover alone takes away a sense of value for the money. Amazon needs to offer a better quality cover to all current Kindle owners without incurring any additional cost because when it comes to the Kindle cover, what we got for the money is a bunch of junk!DO NOT PAY MONEY FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK IT NEEDS TO BE GIVEN TO YOU FOR FREE!!!

1 out of 5 stars Extraordinarily Poor Cover Design   October 11, 2008

I just got my Kindle and, like most folks, love it! But the cover is poorly designed... remarkably so, as it is intended to hold and protect such a sophisticated, expensive device. There is a flat, 1.25" plastic tab inside the right-hand side of the cover that is designed to fit into a niche on the battery cover (located on the back of the Kindle). However, the niche is only a shallow indentation and there is no "catch" or "locking" mechanism that fastens the Kindle to the plastic tab. The niche itself could have easily been designed with a v-shaped indention that would grab the edge of the plastic tab, but that is not the case. The Kindle easily falls out of the cover.

Inside the spine of the book cover are two corners that fit over the left-hand corners (upper and lower) of the Kindle. They fit around the Kindle nicely, but do nothing to hold the device in place.

My solution was to use a small piece of adhesive Velcro on the back of the Kindle. I placed the Velcro on the white plastic upper back portion of the Kindle - not on the battery cover as the stress of holding the device in place will pull the battery cover off. I wait to see if I will regret putting an adhesive material on my Kindle or on the suede interior of the book cover. I find it extraordinary that this cover was so poorly designed that a user is forced to "rig" it or risk having the Kindle fall out and possibly break.

On the positive side, there is a nicely padded portion in the inner left-hand side of the cover that cushions the screen well. When the left-hand side of the book cover is folded back and secured with the elastic strap, a small ledge forms on the left-hand side that makes a decent hand-hold when reading the Kindle.

All in all, just a small adjustment in design would have made for a much more effective book cover, even using the exact same materials. If I had purchased this cover separately, I would return it immediately. I agree with the reviewer who said that Amazon should feel obligated to redesign the book cover and replace the defective design at no charge to all purchasers.
