Best Console Golf Game October 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have played dozens of golf games dating back to golf on the Commodore-64. Some games have been completely pathetic, while others have been relatively good. I bought Tiger Woods 09 for the Wii basically because I like to try most every golf game that hits the market. My expectations for this game were actually fairly low, as EA has not exactly put out killer software for the Wii.
Having put in over 30 hours with Tiger Woods 09 I can safely say that this is the most fun console golf game I have ever played. Not only is the game incredibly deep with an absolute ton of modes of play, but it also sports a great online component. The developers really did a good job of making TW09 a truly fun multi-player experience.
What makes Tiger Woods 09 such a great game is the control. The 1:1 swing mechanic can be tuned in a variety of ways. It takes some getting used to in terms of shot strength, but once the user gets it down the game is butter. As far as putting is concerned, this is the best putting system in a golf game, no questions asked. Yes, the putting system may seem confusing at first, but after spending some time with it the user will realize that putting in TW09 is as close to real-life putting yet seen in a golf game. Everything from the clearly visible slope on the greens to the depth of resources the putting system provides to the user makes hanging out on the green a joy.
As to be expected, the graphics of the Wii version of Tiger Woods 09 are not as detailed as those of the 360/PS3 versions, but they are still not too shabby. I particularly like the way the undulations and elevation changes on each hole are depicted.
Finally, EA smartly included an "All-Play" level of difficulty that allows inexperienced or less-skilled gamers to be able to be competitive. Of course, there are standard and advanced difficuly levels as well. This allows someone who has never played the game or is not very good to be able to play with a seasoned TW pro and still have fun without being blown out of the water. I like to play on the hardest difficulty level, but when someone comes over to the house they still have fun since they can play on the easier mode.
Overall, Tiger Woods 09 is exactly the type of sports game Wii owners deserve. It wonderfully takes advantage of the controller technology, offers a ton of modes of play and customizations, and has a high fun factor. Get this game and spend some time learning to play it properly. You will not be sorry.
Tiger Woods Golf 2009 October 5, 2008 The game is realistic with lots of options. It would help if better directions came with the game, because of all the options. Overall: Great!
Not impressed. October 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this game without really seeing it first and wish I hadn't. It just isn't as much fun as anticipated. Too hard to guage the ball distance, can't really control it. Playstation2 golf games more entertaining in my opinion.
Bad and inconsistent controls mar this otherwise pretty good game September 27, 2008 First, let me say that this is the first TW game I have had on Wii, but I played it alot on PS2 and gamecube from 2002-2007. If you are familiar with the game on other platforms it uses the analog stick to control the swing strength (or percentage). Here you use the the Wii remote to control your swing, and I have to say that if this is the third TW title on wii it's gonna take like 5 more years to create a well controlled game. Putting is atrocious if you actually try to perform a putting motion. With that said, it took me all of 15 minutes to become a good putter because I immediately ditched the traditional putting motion in favor of sitting down, holding the wii remote sideways-sensor down, and gently pulled and pushed the remote with the other hand. This works like 95% of the time and I don't miss much anymore, and contrary to some people who don't like the 1 chance putt preview, I think it is reasonably fair and accurate (but only AFTER you max out putting on your created golfer).
With my putting fixed and my previous experience, I should be able to dominate the world, right? Heck no! Why? BECAUSE THERE IS NO FREAKING WAY TO TAKE A HALF SHOT! But then you may ask, "why not use the nunchuck, then it should be just like other platforms?" AGAIN WRONG! It's not like EA hasn't had 7+ years using the analog stick to control half shots with pretty accurate results, but with the Wii nunchuck it's either 60% or 105% no matter how far you bring it back, and you won't know which one you're gonna get 'til after the shot. And don't even get me started on pitches from the sand or rough. The only other distance control is to hit underneath the ball or to hit over the top, but even that is inconsistent at best. At least spin can help you avoid terrible lies when you overshoot the green by 25 yards from 65 yards away. And don't bother with the swing trainer, its just more B.S.
Other than the bad and inconsistent controls, the game modes and online play is pretty well done. Plenty of fun stuff to do if you can actually stand all the missed putts and pitches you're gonna have. Tiger challenge has great variation in selecting which types of matches or skill games you want to play. Good course selection with the usual favorites (pebble beach, st andrews) and some newbies. Online play progresses pretty fast, the only thing is that they should put in like 2 or 3 time extensions per match, because sometimes 30 seconds is not long enough for you to line up/distance your shot perfectly. Overall this game has some good things about it, but if they can't even get the analog swing right, how can you expect anything from a motion sensing controller?
Addicting Game September 25, 2008 This is a great game. the game play is addicting, the play is logical. If I have one complaint it's the putting. Putting is not intuitive, it feels like you have to swing for the fences to putt, and it's very difficult to get it to putt at three quarter strength. If you don't swing for the fences, you only get credit for 1/2 strength, and you unfairly dub the ball.
The play with the clubs is pretty logical, drives and wood play requires you to swing similar to a real golf game, Iron selection is logical.
Picking out clothes and accessories is great fun, as is picking custom reactions to good and bad plays.
So all in all, this game is a lot of fun. I have spent many hours playing it, and plan to spend many more.
