4 out of 5 stars Great albeit no Home Run Derby   June 29, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

That's right, no Home Run Derby in this version of the game, even though the PS2 release managed to squeeze it in. The reasoning behind this I can only assume is to ensure the PS2 version of the game sells on par with the PS3's.

Nearly every conceiveable aspect to the game has been covered here and allows for pretty much anyone with little to no experience with the concept of the sport to jump in. When pitching you're given suggestions on which pitch to throw and a location, although of course you're not restricted to throwing the recommended pitches. Batting is handled well allowing you to choose between Rookie and Veteran/Hall of Fame styles, meaning you can choose Rookie if you're unfamiliar or uncomfortable using the analog stick to pick a spot in or out of the strike zone to swing at pitches, or Veteran/H.O.F. style batting if you want more control of where you make contact with the ball.

There's options for nearly all aspects of the game, so should you have trouble in a certain area of the game or find it too easy, you're allowed to modify pretty much any setting you can think of, including the stamina of yours and CPU/Player 2's pitchers to allow for more/less consistant pitches over a period of time as the game progresses.

Road To the Show is a nice take on a Career Mode which allows you to create a new player starting in AA, and eventually/potentially playing games in the MLB. Although to really get anywhere decent it will require that you put a fair amount of time and care in how you progress as a player. Should you ignore your training and/or be locked in a long slump, you may find yourself benched; in bad status with your coach and if you reach AAA or the Majors, demoted and sent back down to AAA/AA.

Overall, if you're a fan or have been looking to find a good baseball game to play, this would likely be your best option to date.

4 out of 5 stars Best '08 baseball game.   June 23, 2008

I have played MLB 2K8 for PS3, 360 and Wii. That game his horrible on every one of those formats. From freezing problems to loading glitches, not to mention the gameplay controls that are horribly, epically, disastrously difficult to master. That game is simply not fun.

MLB 08: The Show is everything that game is not. The graphics are outstanding. The play calling is entertaining. The cut scenes add depth to the game rather than taking it away. Most of all, gameplay is easy to master. This is simply the most fun 2008 baseball game on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice   June 21, 2008
This game is great and very addicting. The graphics are top notch, and road to the show is very fun. Hitting is not easy, but once you get the hang of it, it's not too hard. I've seen a few glitches, but nothing to worry about. If you are looking for the best baseball game to date, here it is.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable realism   June 15, 2008

This game is unbelievable real. From the gameplay, to the character motion to the feel of the game. I was blown away the first time I saw the game and I am still surprised each time. This game quickly became my sons favorite game, they put away NBA 2K7 and several other sports games to play this one. My 12 year old is into the career and season play, building his player while my 7 year old loves quickplay mode--just to play a quick game. Highly recommended--you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Making progress...   June 13, 2008
MLB 08: The Show is a very good game overall but it has a few flaws.

The only thing I want to say about this game is that it takes forever to get out of AA let alone AAA. I created a shortstop for the Mariners, went throught spring training, and played very nicely. I hit 2 doubles my first game and kept a batting average of about .289 - .314 throught the rest of spring training. My first season, the Mariners put me in AA. I played my first season there and won the playoffs. Than I played for 5 more seasons in the AA with no luck even getting into AAA.

I feel like even thought I am not getting all my goals done, I still make not progress even if I try.

But then again it could be that I just suck at this game.

Overall Recommendation:
score: 8/10

I would recommend this game to most people, these people being the ones that actually have the patience to keep trying to make progress with this game.

But whatever you do, don't get MLB 2k8. It sucks.
