5 out of 5 stars You must like baseball   August 8, 2008

I picked up the previous baseball game and returned it. B/c of these reviews I decided to buy it. I like it so far. I find the base running a little challenging and the instructional manual does not cover all the aspects of playing the team. I'm still unsure what SIMS does. I assume the PS3 plays the part of the season for you. You have to really appreciate the sport to sit down and enjoy it. I do like the idea of saving in the middle of an inning. I also like the season, but I'm still trying to understand how to manage the team. I'm still picking up on the game. Other than that the pitching, hitting and fielding is a breeze. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars has everything you want in a baseball game   August 5, 2008
This game does it all! You can play manager as well as all the players. The game comes with all the opening-day rosters for all Major league baseball teams. It does seem that each one of the players plays differently, and hits differently according to each players statistics. So by selecting different ball clubs to play against each other it does make a difference on the outcome. This game even has all the AAA minor-league baseball teams in it so you can play them against major leagues or against themselves. This is the first baseball game that I have played that really does play like baseball. The other baseball game I have is for the PC and it does not even compare to the quality of play of this game.
The graphics are incredible, all the players look so real, and they really do look like the real guy. This is the first PlayStation 3 baseball game that I played and I found that it takes some practice in getting the pitching good. I ended up walking a bunch of hitters before I could get strikeouts. For playing the fielders the game has a very easy and sensible control method and I found that it works very well. This game takes a lot of quick thinking just like baseball play really does.
So if you're looking for a baseball game that plays like one this one is hard to beat. It is very well thought out and the controls work very well, the graphics are fantastic and it has all the players and teams that you could ever want with their statistics programmed.

5 out of 5 stars Best since Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball   July 30, 2008
I'm an avid Baseball fan and for the past 4-5 years I haven't been able to get my hands on a quality baseball game.... UNTIL NOW! This game rocks, flat out. Graphics are outstanding and so is the gameplay. The controls are really easy, even a child could play this game. Many different options to include "Road to the show" which i personally love! You create a ballplayer and pick the position, apperance, and even choose which stats to increase. You start out in Double A and get promoted up as you perform. The best part about it is, you only play when it affects your player.

This game is worth every penny. If you're a sports fan go treat yourself to this one tonight!

5 out of 5 stars best baseball game ever!   July 22, 2008
if you want to have the realistic feel of playing baseball this is the game for you! The graphics are pretty decent and the gameplay is excellent! There are a few minor glitches in programming but nothing that takes away from the games overall experience! Stay away from the 2K series I thought the 07 version was a pretty decent game! The developers tried to get too fancy with their new pitching system and didn't worry about anything else. The graphics are horrible and the gameplay is the worst I've ever experienced. In this year's version if you own a PS3 purchase The Show 08 if you don't, purchase last years version of 2K this years version is absolutely not worth it! I wouldn't play it if somebody paid me $100 an hour.

2 out of 5 stars I've had root canals done that were more fun!   July 14, 2008

This really is one beautiful game; it truely is. The players and ballparks are simply gorgeous. The graphics are first rate for the most part, and game just exudes the look and feel of baseball as you see it on TV. The player mannerisms are all there, and the first time you boot this game on your PS3 you will probably think, "Finally, someone managed to get a baseball game right!!" And you'll probably feel that way right up until you actually try to do something in this game, at which point you will find out that MLB08: The Show is a much better show than it is a game.

The swing controls are klunky, and even if you dumb them down to just timing with the classic settings you are probably in for a rough ride. And then there is all the phony drama. In Road to the Show that means having your team mates start a rally just in time for you to hit into a double-play to end the inning. Get used to it friends, because that is the norm. Then there are opposing pitchers that have stratospheric ERAs who manage to seem to paint the corners just when you come up to the plate. Or how about the fact that 95% of the balls you hit in the air are outs? Or what about how all those great line drive shots to the infield gaps between second and short or second and first manage to be outs. Yes indeed, you are going to fall victim to the diving defensive play so many times that you might think this is the conventional method of making a routine put out in baseball. Yep, just dive for it...you'll catch it. I guess the game developers think it makes for more drama if you hit a hard shot to the gap and the defense makes a great diving play to silence a rally. Perhaps, but a run-of-the-mill grounder would be welcome. All of this leads to a ton of goal frustration, and it's a real disincentive to continue playing the game. I took the best team in the majors and played against the worst team six times as a player and six times as a manager and lost them all. Jeez, I should have been able to pit the Red Sox against the Marlins and walked away from the console for a while and let the game play it self for a Bosox win. It just doesn't add up when a team hitting less than .200 can regularly tag an ace for a bucketload of hits and runs or having teams with league-leading batting averages get regularly shut out by pitchers with close to double-digit ERAs.

This game is just plain BAD (Broken As Designed), and has some serious playability and play balance problems. If you're itching to throw $60 away, then take three 20s out of your wallet and put a match to them -- since that is likely to be more entertaining than this game.
