One of the Best Ever for any console. August 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Read the other five star reviews already here for in depth discussion on all the superb aspects of this game. No need to repeat everything they've said - I agree with every single point. Highest marks for gameplay, music score, fun, replay value, atmosphere, and overall presentation. This has a massive world to explore and discover and mysteries abound at every stop. Highest Possible Recommendation. Over and out.
Space adventure title had a "Mass Effect" on my free time July 30, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'd been looking forward to playing this game for months before it came out. So when it hit the store I picked up a copy and it did not leave my x-box for weeks and weeks. I am a casual gamer, but I'm very avid about great games like this.
If you are wondering whether or not this game will be fun for you, it will! Mass Effect has something for everybody. The graphics are outstanding, and navigating through a galaxy is soo much fun! There are 'choose your own adventure' moments, the dialogue system is fluid and great. The story line is one of the best I've ever experienced in a game. The intense level of character customization is unmatched by any I've seen. The action and third person shooter playability are outstanding. The weapons, bionic powers, and armor are fun and varied enough to make it interesting all the way till the end. Plus, you get to build your team, so you're not just stuck with the type of character you create, you really can get it all. I did a LOT of the side missions before finishing the main story line, because I didn't want this game to end.
The only think that sucks in this game is the driving system. There are a few (very few) times you have to drive your rover around a planet over rocky terrain, and its horrible. If you're on flat ground its fine, but this is something they need to address for the sequel.
If you enjoy a great story, a good score (sound effects) in a game and want to get drawn into a game with great graphics and playability - GET THIS GAME!
Overhyped -- Short July 30, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The big reviews said this was the best game ever. I should have known better.
The game is ok, much like any console game in terms of controls and features, but the game is short and too linear. I got to the endgame in a little over 10 hours of play.
There are a number of side missions that have no meaning, collecting stuff didn't seem to have much of an effect, nor did experience other than providing more hit points.
Maybe I missed too much by following the mission, I don't know.
I agree that the story is better than most, but in the end I thought, is this all there is?
I'm trying to think of something truly unique and positive to say about this game but nothing seems to come to mind. It was fun, but not enough to merit the high praise it has received.
It is an ok game, but very much over-hyped.
Massively Effective July 29, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is absolutely mind blowingly great. First, it actually takes a whole play through to kind of figure things out...making at least one replay a real possibility. Secondly, the story is really, really good. Your decisions actually change the outcome of the game and there are consequences and it is almost never obvious what the right choice is going to be. Sometimes the choice is permanent, too. I tried changing the final out come by replaying the ending and I got my first ending again. That character is locked into that story line for Mass Effect 2.
Also let me say the Xbox achievement system is awesome here. Played 20 hours the first time through and only racked up about 500 points. Meaning, I missed stuff :) Sure some of them are replay type of achievements but some of them are not.
A great, great game. I'd recommend playing as a female as that actor's voice work is very strong.
