4 out of 5 stars Few Complaints   June 22, 2008
I've always played and enjoyed RPGs. When Bioware announced this game, I wasn't that interested, and didn't get interested until after its release. I bought it, but it was on a list of second choices. I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing it. I don't like many shooters, but this one makes it easy for anyone to play, but doesn't hand you an IWIN button. I imagine the gameplay wouldn't be as enjoyable for those who play shooters the most, though.

The Mako, the off-road vehicle you travel the surface of planets in, was fun at first but got repetitive towards the end. However, I did go on every available planet, whether I actually needed to or not, so a lot of the riding around could have been avoided.

I felt the story was solid, and you have plenty of choices to make to develop your character. The paragon/renegade system was nice - new and still serving the same purpose without being contrived. I was occasionally unhappy with the dialogue system, but overall it's a great feature. The conversations felt very cinematic and I wanted to listen to them so it was nice not to have to read my character's dialogue twice while still being able to choose my own words.

Recently my disc was scratched, before I got a chance to play through a second time. I purchased it again, after a month or two of debating, because it was that enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Fascinating Game   June 16, 2008
I am not a big RPG person at all. My RPG history is Evolution, FFVII, FFX, then I played Invisible War (Deus Ex) which I loved and want to do over and over again, but then I got MASS EFFECT! This took Invisible War, upgraded added and refined it. If you are all about action and shooting only, then this is not the game for you. But if you like a great story line, squad based action, great graphics and sound, huge systems to explore and customization. This game will have you riveted.

I highly recommend Mass Effect

4 out of 5 stars A fun run into outer-space.... with aliens!   June 14, 2008
This game alone is keeping the space faring sci-fi genre alive in the video game world. The imagination of the developers was really projected well into the atmosphere, aliens, interactions between said aliens and history of the universe they've created. So, basically it's how a bioware game is supposed to be.

If you've been disappointed with nwn2, like I was, this game should reinvigorate your love for what Bioware does. It plays out a lot like Knights of the old Republic, with things like the "light" and "dark" side being replaced by the terms "paragon" and "renegade" respectively as well as some abilities (like "lift") which would seem right at home in the Star Wars universe.

While one could say that the indoor, over the shoulder shooting style of the game is some of the best fun to be had in a game, the exact opposite is true for whatever adventures you have in the Makko -- the remote control-looking all terrain vehicle that traverses through sometimes impossible to navigate terrain. You just don't drive from battle to battle in this vehicle, you have to fight from within it by means of a mounted machine gun and a mounted grenade launcher that I have yet to identify. It is truly disappointing that the majority of the game (if you decide to do the sidequests) is played through this crappy car.

5 out of 5 stars Most Underrated game of the year....   June 13, 2008
If you ask anyone what their favorite game is, most of them will say either Halo, Call of Duty, or Bioshock which are good games in their own right. However, Mass Effect definitely wins the most underrated game award of the year. I was just casually surfing Amazon when I came across this gem, and decided to order it. It was well worth it, let me tell you. The game sequences are beautiful and the characters are so finely detailed that there is no need for cinematics. The plot is deep and rich, with twists and turns around every corner leading the gamer into new problems to solve and information to use when playing through the game. The controls are very easy to learn and master, giving you varying levels of control over your AI teammates so those who are new to the game can concentrate on playing while those who are already adept can use the AIs to the their best advantage.

The Mass Effect world could almost be compared to the world of Star Wars. Every object has its base in the Mass Effect history, and through an info bar in the start menu can be used to give the gamer a very in-depth account about the weapons, ships, armor, and prothean structures that are used throughout the game. This allows the gamer to become very involved in the Mass effect world. Combine that with almost no loading times and you get an experience that is hard to find in any other game.

There are very few cons about this game, but they can be annoying ones. Due to the complexity of the game and all the interactive people walking around, the game experiences many glitches. During a fight with the Matriarch my character was "Knocked out", forced to the floor and squiggling all over the place. This rarely happens, and all I had to do was load my last save. Two other things I dislike about Mass Effect is the autosave feature and the elevators. The autosave feature does do what it is designed to do, but doesn't save nearly enough. You really need to remember to save at regular intervals in order to prevent having to redo multiple areas. In Mass Effect the elevators are used instead of a loading screen, which contributes to the overall game experience but makes the elevator rides very, very long. (Plus, with their advanced technology you'd think that they might have faster elevators? Yes? Well, apparently elevator speed wasn't on the top of their priority list.) There is however, some amusing dialogue between your characters during the elevator ride which managed to grab a few smiles from me during some of the more comical moments.

Overall, Mass Effect is an amazing game with a whole universe that is begging for you to explore. If you like Role Playing Games, I strongly suggest you at least rent this game and try it for yourself. I bought it and was hooked from day one.

5 out of 5 stars Great story.   June 7, 2008
It takes a while to get into this game, about an hour I'd say. Once you get past that part though, it's really good. It's mostly story driven (being an rpg that should be obvious)and I'd have to say that the 'action' is fairly sparse towards the beginning of the game.

If the words "Role Playing Game" might scare you away from this one because you've never beat one, or you just don't have time to beat it, I'm pretty sure you can beat this one. I did, and I've been on the first disc of FF VII for seven or eight years. If I can do it, I'm pretty sure almost anyone can.
