1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed to say the least.   March 1, 2008

This has to be the worse Mario game ever. I love Mario games and this was very dissapointing. First you have to click and read through 10 minutes of back and forth messages. Then you have to read crap like every other minute. The game itself is also dum. I would say it is for a 3 year old but they would not be able to read it. It is really dumb. Sorry I wasted my money on it. On ebay it goes after the boycott.

3 out of 5 stars One player only   February 26, 2008
I bought this in a rush during a Gold Box sale and I wish I would have checked it more thoroughly. This is only for one player, so my two sons have to take turns (this does not go over well, by the way). This is my own fault for not checking, but I wish I would have held out and just bought the Mario Galaxy (higher price, higher ratings, and one to two players capable). My sons do enjoy playing this one, though. If it had been designed for two players I would have given it a higher rating.

3 out of 5 stars I've had better...   February 22, 2008

I bought this game because of the reviews in the Nintendo Power magazine. I played Paper Mario 1 and 2 and they were awesome.

Super Paper Mario (aka Paper Mario 3) is a good game. I enjoyed playing it; however it is not as good as its two predecessors. It's good that Nintendo changed some things about this game; however, they ended up with the same side scrolling platform-like game, besides the brief moments of Mario in the 3D world, which made the only interesting part of the game.

An RPG has to be in 3D, or at least in perspective view to bring a good feel. I like changes for good. Like another review I read about this game; I loved the fact of Mario having a Jet-pack-like device in Super Mario Sunshine. I loved Zelda, Wind Waker, with its funny graphics (but, if someone changes the Zelda style of game and I'll trash my Nintendo right there). This brought new ideas for the game. But going back for 2D as they did in Paper Mario 3 with only few 3D moments for an RPG is somehow disappointing. I expected more of this game, even though, the graphics were cute.

(Note to Nintendo: Make games based in new characters with new storylines).

This is a game to play only once. So, rent it from a rental store and spend one or two weeks to finish it; enjoy saving the world and return it. Don't spend your money for something you'll play only once.

Pros.

Good story.
Creative 2D-3D switching (allows fresh puzzles).
Cute-looking graphics.

Cons.

The storyline is too slow (few predictable twists).
Time in 3D too few for an RPG.
Lacks fun factor to bring you to play again after beating the game once.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing   February 7, 2008

This is not Paper Mario. It's Super Mario from the old NES redone in the Paper Mario theme. Everything I loved about Paper Mario--the turn-based attacks, the grid-like map where you can wander to your heart's content (a la "Dry, Dry Desert), the familiar faces--not in this game. Instead, it's 2D in a weird world with art deco characters. The only venture you have into wandering 3D is on a short timer and takes HP if you linger too long (like 15 seconds). No FP in this version. Just think NES and jump around on Goomba heads.

Using the Wii remote sideways was irritating. I kept wishing I could use my old Game Cube controller instead. At least it had more buttons if Nintendo insists on virtually ignoring the Wii remote and using it as a Classic controller for this game anyway.

I am very disappointed in this version. I should have just bought Galaxy and not wasted the money on something I'll have to find a kid to give this to. The original Paper Mario is a downloadable Console Game for Wii. I'll just replay the old one to soothe my buyer's remorse.

5 out of 5 stars This 47 yr old father loves this game   January 17, 2008

My 7 yr old and I play this a lot together. It's a difficult game, but not too hard. It's really engrossing. Totally our favorite game on the Wii.

People complain about the story being slow, and I tend to agree. However, it's not too bad, and there are so many other things which are fun about the game.
