The best J-E Dictionary you can get! September 26, 2006 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This dictionary is the best possible dictionary you can get. I've purchased, used, and browsed about a dozen different J-E, E-J, J-E/E-J and J-J dictionaries before finding this one! This is definately the one you should start with.
Furigana is the style where they put kana readings above kanji characters so you know how to pronounce the kanji. You don't need to actually know any kanji to use this dictionary, but you do need to be able to read kana. Any student of Japanese should learn to read kana as soon as possible. It only takes a few weeks, and you'll do much better learning Japanaese after you do.
Each entry contains a number of examples which are all clear and easy to read. (Very high-quality printing). The English-to-japanese section also includes a number of common phrases. All entries include full sample usage, usually quite a few different usages to demonstrate slightly different meanings.
Advanced users should also consider getting the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary (ISBN 4-7700-2855-5) to help learning Japanese kanji. See my review for that book.
Incredible September 13, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This dictionary is a must have for serious students of Japanese. I especially love the example sentences it gives, something I haven't seen in other Japanese-English English-Japanese dictionaries. I would not recommend it for the dilettante or traveler, as it's size would make transport difficult and it uses kana, not romanized Japanese; so understanding of hiragana and katakana is necessary. It does seem expensive compared to other dictionaries, but it really is worth it.
Great Resource August 18, 2006 I've used this before I bought it and I don't regret purchasing this dictionary.
Blinded. May 31, 2006 7 out of 20 found this review helpful
This dictionary has a major problem -- you cannot read the furigana because it is way too small. If I could read it, then perhaps I would be able to give a better rating.
A Wonderful Product for this student of Japanese May 28, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
As a student of Japanese, I needed a simple, beginner's dictionary that easily translated from Jse to English and Vice Versa. Looking around, I have not found a better dictionary (or a better price for the content). I highly reccomend this dictionary for the beginner but not for a person looking up Kanji, as this is NOT a Kanji dictionary.
