5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!!!   February 17, 2007

Have you ever purchased something that you enjoy so much that you feel like buying another one just like it? Well, that's how I feel about this dictionary. As a matter of fact, I'll probably buy another one because I'm marking this one up like crazy. At first I was unsure if I'd like the hard-cover copy because I prefer bending a paperback while using my thumb to quickly scroll through the pages to find what I need. What I ended up doing is buying sticky page markers and placing them on the pages of "a, ka, sa, ta, na, ha, ma, ya, ra, and wa". I also use soft-tip colored pencils to highlight words so the highlights don't bleed through the page. Of the $1,200 that I've invested in Japanese language study materials, this dictionary has become the back-bone of it all. I recommend beginners learn the Kana's and you will be enlightened to a whole new world of Japanese study and comprehension. Good Luck and Have Fun!

I bought this book for my son who studies Japanese, and according to him is one of the best dictionaries he's found, it made a great Christmas present, thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent dictionary for beginners   December 8, 2006

This is a great beginner's dictionary. As I study more Japanese, I keep coming back to this book to get examples of usage and shades of meaning for common words: the many example sentences are invaluable. The furigana are essential because they make the book self-contained, so you never have to wonder how anything is pronounced. The dictionary is arranged in standard kana order with no romaji, so it is a valuable introduction to Japanese dictionaries in general. There are also occasional usage and cultural notes, and lists of counters and verb conjugations (the latter in romaji). It uses a fairly small vocabulary, so you need a bigger dictionary for complex definitions. But to know common words and how they are used, there is nothing better.

I have about 10 other J-E dictionaries as well as about ten other books and none of them come close to being as useful as this one. I live in Japan and me and my friends can sit and talk with ease when we have this around but if we have to rely on other dictionaries we always stumble through conversations.

All of Kondansha's products (I have about 5) are written in the most appropriate way for the subject being addressed. It is very apparent that the people writing for this company care about their readers.
