2 out of 5 stars It's going back   June 9, 2007

I just recieved this pokedex, and it's going right back in exchange for the prima version.

If you want a guide simply to have a list of all the pokemon, their types, evolution levels, if they need a special item to evolve, and list of moves, then this book will be perfect for you.

The pictures are good, the pages are nice, it's a good quality book, it even has a bit of a walkthrough post elite four, but,

IF YOU WANTED A GUIDE SO YOU WOULD KNOW WHERE POKEMON ARE LOCATED, THIS BOOK HAS NO INFORMATION FOR YOU.

There is absolutly nothing on where to find pokemon or even which version you will find the various pokemon in (not as big of a deal for seasoned gamers, but a big deal for newbies and anyone with only one version). The #1 reason I purchased my first pokedex at the R/S/E level was because I had found all the ones that were common and needed help with rare and legendary pokemon.

The prima guide has typos, this is true, but, they also have locations.

It just depends on what you want out of your dex.

5 out of 5 stars the Pokedex of Choice   June 8, 2007

The pokedex has all the casual gamer searches for in a guide: the final part of the walkthrough (post elite 4) including strategies on catching the legendary pokemon left in the end, as well as where to go what to do and what items are in the final section of the game; Afterwards is a basic run of the mill pokedex.

First of all let me adress an issue many of the other have gotten wrong, this guide does bring:

-- A COMPLETE SECION OF POKEMON ABILITIES,
-- COMPLETE ITEM LIST (INCLUDING HEALTH. BATTLE, CONTEST EQUIVALENT, AND CONTEST ONLY) and WHERE TO GET EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM.
-- A POSTER WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE LOCATIONS OF ALL POKEMON AVAILABLE IN DIAMOND/PEARL [map of shinnoh]
-- A SMALL ADVANCED BATTLE TACTICS FOR THE BATTLE TOWER/WI-FI BATTLE BEGGINERS.
-- SMALL GUIDE TO THE UNDERGROUND AND BATTLE TOWER
so its NOT missing any information much like the oher reviews claim... its all there you justhave to look really.

Now about the only thing that this guide lacks is a longer advanced battle section or maybe recomendations for raising each individual pokemon (really how hard can it be to add a small section to each pokemon where they tell you the recomended natures that pokemon should have). It is nice though since it does bring all the pokemon (save the 3 as of et unreleased give away pokemon of D/P - Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus-) As well as a list of the moves they learn (egg or level) and TM and HM list. It does have small charts indicating the general look of a pokemon's base stats (although I think adding the actual numbers would have been MUCH less confusing) so that helps a small amount when building you team and looking at what nature your pokemon should have.

In the end I would recomend this guide to most people who wish to have a quick reference of all pokemon and items. It wont give you a complete edge in battling but it will help. The casual gamer should get this as this does indeed help when going into the world of advanced battling.

5 out of 5 stars Its a great book overall   June 7, 2007

I actually found everything I wanted from it. The beginning of the book tells you what you can do after you defeat the Elite 4 and become Champion including locations of other Pokemon that appear after obtaining the National Pokedex. Then it gives you detailed move descriptions from all 490 Pokemon. Lastly, it gives you a data section from every item to every move a Pokemon can do in the game.

If your looking for Pokemon locations, that's what the Official Pokemon Diamond & Pearl Strategy Guide is for. In the back of that book, it tells you the locations of all the Pokemon located in the Sinnoh region. Overall, the Ultimate National Pokedex is a helpful book. I give it a great rating!!

4 out of 5 stars This isn't like Nintendo....   June 6, 2007

I never buy Prima guides because of all the typos, mistakes and missing info, but this Nintendo guide shocks me because it's missing one vital thing: Pokemon locations! There are no notes on where each Pokemon can be found! Other than that, it's a pretty complete guide with impeccable accuracy, and it does have the Pokemon Abilities index in the back, dispite what the previous reviewer said.

3 out of 5 stars In the middle..   June 6, 2007

This was not what I hoped for at all.
First, it did fall apart once I opened it. And not because I was to rough too it! But when it is a Pokedex, it should handle a lot of reading and pageswitching. But it did not. Now pages are floating around ;_; Makes me sad.

And the Pokedex itself, was not as good as I hoped for. It really misses a lot of thing, like an explenation (?) on their abilities, in witch game to catch them, more about every move and so on.
Sniffle.
