2K8 is still the best basketball game around October 12, 2007 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Finally got my fix of basketball. Realistic - yes, this is much more realistic compared to Live08 on Wii, even with the motion control on Wii.
Is it worth the $60? 1. Much improved graphics. The motions, shots, falling on the ground, all looks and feels real. Huge improvement on the arena & crowd. 2. Controls are very tight, which is always important for sports games. 3. Camera angels - wow there's a ton of em, too many to count. 4. Addition of dunk contest 5. Addition of little things like player option on contract, training camp points, player emotions, it's like fun little side quests on RPGs. You don't have to mess with it, but it's a great diversion.
Just a few complaints 1. Controller setup - there's literally no variation now. 2. Manual - $60 for the game, please give us a little thicker manual with more content. 3. For new comers - there isn't any training or explainations, if you haven't played any of the 2k bb series, might take a while to learn it.
For the BB fans, we gotta get the new version every season. There isn't many simulation choices out there. You've got Live, 2K, NBA by sony - These last few years, Live has been going down hill, though Wii motion is kinda fun, it does get old and tiring. NBA by sony, played the 2007 version, that was beyond bad. Have to 2K would be the preferred choice for a BB fix.
NBA 2K8 - Jekyll & Hyde October 7, 2007 1 out of 13 found this review helpful
After playing the game for 3 months, I have to say that the game is very fragmented in terms of quality. VERY fragmented. Some parts are absolutely incredibly well done. Player movement and emulation of real-life players are awesome, definitely best ever. Association mode is as good as it's ever been, and the defensive lockdown feature is a nice add-on. Also, the way they've approached player attributes is brilliant.
On the other hand, other parts are horrendously executed. There's a fine line between challenging and blatantly cheap, and this game flies way past that line many times. There are many instances where clearly nobody tested the game for quality (a great example is the 1st of 2 free throws always having a slight delay; they have fixed this problem with a patch).
So overall this game has to be a 3 of 5 stars because half the game is outstanding while the other half is some of worst I've seen in 20 years of playing games and ~10 years of playing basketball games specifically (no exaggeration here, I can't recall being more frustrated at a game in recent memory).
All-in-all, I do recommend all basketball game fans get this game because of the good parts. At times (assuming you're relatively hard to please like me) you'll want to smash the disk with a hammer, but in then end I think it's worth it, especially if you like Association/Franchise mode. I can't emphasize enough how well done and refined that part is.

Disclaimer: I've been a avid NBA Live fan/gamer till 2006, so I would say that I can notice some of the improvements in 2K8..First off the players do not stake across the court as they do in Live. Second the players actually look like players. I haven't touched Live 08 for the simple fact that I feel that 2k8 is more realistic. Nice added touch is that during certain times in the game the crowd would get on their feet and start to cheer louder. I feel that this game in almost too realistic because how many open layups you tend to miss around the basket, no problem there just work for that rebound. The AI is much smarter than earlier version so they make those crazy passes when necessary to get the ball down low..I took it online last night and that has up the level of enjoyment. 2K8 is the most complete package in Basketball game I've seen..Oh almost forgot then if you don't want to play in a gym you can take it to the playground for 1v1 up to 5v5 then the slam dunk contest..Gotta play it to believe it..In fact that's what I'm going to do now..
