great fighter for your nintendo ds November 19, 2005 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
To start, yes this is a japanese only game and yes you will have to find a way to import this awesome game. Though it is a fighting game, the text is pretty heavy and will require some time to research the translations to understand the game and how to navigate through it.
Basically its like smash brothers but not entirely. the stage designs are like smash brothers. Platforms allow you to jump from place to place. Items randomly spawn on the battlefield that can add depth to the game. Here's the difference though. All characters have a life bar and a special bar. KO your opponents from whacking down their health...or knocking them off the stage.
controls are easy and responsive. but take a little bit of time to get use to. X is for special attack, Y is medium attack B is light attack and A is jumping. you have 3 choices of either pushing L, R or down on the D pad to gaurd. pretty standard stuff for 2D fighting game. its pretty hard to screw up controls for a 2D fighting game and thankfully they didn't.
graphically it's all 2D. Not a hint of 3D in it. Of course this isnt a bad thing. I mean with all the action going on on the screen, you wouldn't want lag to interfere with the gameplay. character sprites look fairly decent and animation is pretty smooth.
sound is rather forgettable though. nothing spectactular but thankfully nothing annoying either. you have your normal fighter sound affects mixed with some bland music. The sound department i would have to say is the worst aspect of the game entirely. Imagine this. When the menu shows up it plays some music...then you select something from the menu...screen turns black music stops...then when the screen shows up again the same music plays again from the start -_-;; So not only is the music not spectacular...it replays over and over again which can sort of get annoying. Thankfully it doesnt do that while you are fighting.
I think the best thing about the game would have to be the customization options available to you when creating your dream fighting team. For more information (since there's that many customization options) i strongly recomomend going to www.ign.com and type into their search engine "jump superstars" and take a look at their online guide. It's extremely helpful and will give you the picture and the translation right on top to help you navigate through the whole game. It does require patience and time but in the end it feels rewarding, especially if you unlock all 657 manga panals (known as komas)
Here's the lowdown... Pros: +Your favorite anime characters from 27+ different shonen jump maganzine series are present in this game. Large, colorful cast of characters +easy to learn hard to master +a lot of depth involve when it comes to customizing your characters +there is single cartridge download so only 1 ds with this game is required to play multiplayer, but options are not nearly as good if you and your friend have a copy of this game. +very good multiplayer +controls are easy and responsive +lots of faqs out there written to help you through the japanese barrier. (my recomendation is using [...]) +lots and lots of goodies to unlock from the game. A grand total of 657 manga panels will keep you busy for a while. +watching your favorite character(s) beat up the character(s) that u don't like ^_^
Cons: -music is not very spectacular -same music is recycled a lot throughout the game -its japanese only, which requires you to import it, thus costing you roughly 50 bucks. -AI is pretty dumb -the adventure mode not only feels tedious after a while, but you are pretty much required to sit in front of a faq to understand the mission objectives. -loses it's value if you don't have a human opponent to play against. -extremely low chance (if not 0%) to reaching the USA stores due to the licenses issues.
overall i'd give it 8.6/10

When the forces of good, evil, and everything in between clash in a battle of epic proportions, there's only one place for the fight to unfold: on your Nintendo DS. The world of Jump Superstars is a world of absolute insanity, combining characters from Dragon Ball, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Steel Ball Run, and many, many more popular Japanese comics. Unfortunately for us in the west, the world of Jump Superstars is reserved exclusively for those in Japan.
This is a very good game, which is very simillar to Super Smash Bros. This game is probably the bast game the Nintendo DS can offer. This game is why the DS is made. Very good graphics, gameplay, and everything else. Even though it's in Japanese, I recommend buying it.
