4 out of 5 stars Not too Bad   August 25, 2002
2 out of 4 found this review helpful

I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Pokemon. I have a friend's Game Boy's Blue version that he didn't want anymore, and that's about it. This game really isn't worth getting if you don't have a Game Boy Pak, but it does come with the Transfer Pak, which is nice. Anyway, down to the specifics:

Graphics- These are some of the better graphics on the N64. Watch as an Electrode busts out a Thunder or as Golduck uses Surf, all on a big screen. 8.5/10
Play Control- It's just as easy as the Game Boy games, and control is really not used in much of it. The menus are easy to navigate and the minigames don't take much effort to play. 7.8/10
Game Design- This is basically just the battling feature of the Game Boy games. There are also minigames if you're tired of fighting. An interesting note is that you can store your Game Boy Pokemon on the N64, start a new game on the Game Boy, and then transfer back your traded Pokemon. 8/10
Satisfaction- At the prices it's going for now it's worth it, even when I got it for $$$$ it was worth it(especially because of the Transfer Pak). 7.9/10
Sound- The sound effects and music are appropriate, but the announcer gets old really fast. 7.4/10
Overall- It's worth a rent, and if you're a Pokefan you'll want this in your collection, but otherwise...

3 out of 5 stars Great for any Pokemon addict   June 13, 2002

I have loved Pokemon before the "Pokemon hype" began. I got information about the show on the internet, and watched it when it first came out. I got Pokemon cards for fun before people started collecting them, and going nuts over them. This game is affordable (if you get it used), and fun, especially for Pokemon fans. I love the strategy of Pokemon, and I probably always will, even though I have drifted from the show as I got older.
The strategy of pokemon is of the elements of Earth. For example, fire creatures have the advantage over water creatures, due to the fact that when fire touches the grass it burns. Also, electric creatures have the advantage to water creatures because water conducts electricity. Another example, fire has the advantage over ice because when fire goes near ice, the ice begins to melt because of the head.
Pros:
1) Great Strategy
2) Great for children learning about the elements of earth
3) Fairly good graphics
4) You can connect this with Pokemon Red + Blue (if you buy the transfer pak)
Cons:
1) Many pokemon do not appear in the rental section (not many though)
2) Only can connect with Pokemon Blue or Red, not any other versions of Pokemon Game Boy games.

1 out of 5 stars Big Dissapointment   February 22, 2002

Well this game sure was a dissapointment. I bought it thinking it would be like Smash Bros. in that one battled the pokemon like a real fight. But no, you have to abide to the traditional pokemon rules, and wait patiently while ur being attacked, then retaliate respectively. I found this game a true waste of money. 60$ (at the time) and the only thing different was improved graphics. I'll give it to Nintendo that when one trades through pokemon stadium it looks pretty sweet, but really its no different than the gameboy game. In my opinion, even with the price marked down, its an awful lot of money for mere graphic improvement.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS GAME!   February 14, 2002

This game is a must-have for any hard-core Pokemon gamer. Even if you've never played Pokemon before this games mini-games and main game will amuse you greatly. This is a perfect mixture of strategy and pure fun.
