 A Little Too Simple for My Tastes December 31, 2007

I thought this game would have more to it, such as real-life recipes. If you want to pretend to cook, and that's all, it's good.

My four year old loves this game. It's a fun way to waste a few minutes waiting for a table at the restaurant or a little bit of down time before bed. While sometimes I find it frustrating (it can be a little less than sensitive to some of the stylus movements), in most cases it is intuitive and fun to create little meals.
I also think that it is a bonus that you always `win'. Mama may get annoyed and tell you that you failed through burning eyes at each step, but if you make it through all the steps to make the meal than the meal gets `finished' and you see the final plate. This works well for my daughter who does not quite understand the grading system. When she goes to bed, I work at earning those gold medals!
It is what it is. I wouldn't expect to become so engrossed in that you simply can't walk away, but I would expect a fun game that is appropriate for a wide range of ages and skill levels.

To start off, I have to say that I had been eying this game even before I got around to buying a new DS (which my boyfriend ended up purchasing for an early birthday present - woohoo!), so I'm still relatively new to the world of Nintendo DS and use of it's stylus. I have only had this game one day and have so far found this game to be very entertaining... I'm still amazed at the fact that this game incorporates functioning of blowing on the screen (say, to cool down pasta you're cooking).
This game is completely interactive, allowing you to cook in a bright, cartoon-ish, user friendly kitchen, where you follow instructions for recipes (such as beef steak, pork curry and rice, potato salad, pizza, stuffed peppers, grilled mackerel, miso soup, to name a few) that take you from prep work (such as dicing, shredding, mincing, peeling, battering, rolling, etc) to mixing and cooking, to presentation... all in hopes of earning the highest possible score - ranging from gold, silver and bronze, unlocking new recipes and to, of course, satisfy Mama.
Cooking Mama also allows you a chance to practice preparing the variety of recipes before you actually chose to "make" them for Mama and receive a score based on your culinary performance. There is also a selection in the main menu, called "Use Skill", that allows you to practice specific skills through time-based tests, such as chopping, cutting, peeling, grating, shredding, stewing, frying, etc, in case you're a little rusty or need specific practice on one particular skill. And as if this isn't enough, under "Let's Combine", you are allowed a chance to combine two separate recipes together to create an original dish.
This game is by no means intensive... in fact it borders on mind numbing, but is very entertaining and appropriate for any age. There are enough recipes to keep you entertained and feeling somewhat productive during your game play.
If only cooking in real life were this easy and mess free! So corny but true!

This game is addicting. It requires the use of the stylus and it is really amazing how the designers came up with ways to use it. This game is not an easy kiddie game. I'm sure older kids would love it.
Some of the recipes are gross... I mean, I have never nor will I ever put ketchup in a spaghetti recipe. But it is interesting to see how to fold wontons tho!

When I first started playing this game it was interesting to see how so many dishes are made. I really started to get into it after I had knee surgery and had to lay in bed all day.. some people complain about not being able to peel potatoes or carrots but its all about how you hold the pen and watching what direction the arrow is pointing. Other than that its good for kids who can't actually cook in the kitchen it really inspires little one's really use they skill's. By: A college student who like's anime and games ;O
