a great FPS for the DS February 11, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
this is the first FPS ive actually enjoyed on the DS. i tried metroid prime:hunters, but found the enless running around, trying to find out where to go was a bit annoying. COD is straight up running around shooting the hell out of stuff, which is right up my alley.
right away, i noticed the great graphics. granted, thats not saying alot if u compare the DS to the PSP, but i loved them nontheless. the aiming/shooting was spot on, and the only problem (as other reviewers have stated) is the double tap to zoom in on a target. often times i would be in a heated situation, and frantically try to zoom in on an enemy, only to get killed in the end due to not being able to control the scope.
a great number of weapons in this game...from sniper rifles, to grenades, to gas bombs, to shotguns. each weapon has its own strenths and advantages. my favorite is the sniper rifle, getting them right between the eyes with a head shot (head shots kill the enemies almost instantly, they can withstand several point blank shots to their bodies tho).
ovarall....great game. several different types of level design, from basic FPS, to overview, to missions on vehicles. a good variety of gameplay. it also clocks in a bit on the short side....maybe 20 hours for me to beat the game, but you can always go back and replay any missions you have beaten.
i wouldnt hesitate to recommend this game to any DS owner.
Great Game! January 13, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Purchased this game for my brother and he was so happy to get it... He loves the graphics.
Fantastic DS game! January 2, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
In short this is the best of the FPS' to date for this platform. The graphics are steller for the DS, and the audio is astounding! Put on a set of headphones for this title, you will not be disappointed.
The touch screen works well with a few caveats -- Double tapping the screen causes your rifle to zoom in on targets, I find myself zooming in on accident on many occasions whilst trying to navigate. I think the double-tap speed could have been adjusted better, or perhaps they could have made a option to change the setting for each particular player.
Being that this title is out on every console; excepting the Wii (which is a little odd IMO), I decided to pick it up on the DS.
I was a little skeptical at first, most FPS' on the DS are not just bad -- but many times downright unplayable. I read the reviews and decided to give it a chance for two reasons: One) The online reviews were generally positive, and Two) the other versions are the standard $62.00 each plus tax in PR, making this version a real value.
Overall the gameplay, if somewhat repetitive, and lite (pun intended) on challenge, is good to great. I'm rating it as great due to the platform, and the limitations inherent within.
This is a technical marvel given the platform. Up until now I thought I would only be playing darts with some kid in Japan (and getting beat) for the rest of my DS life, now I can shoot some tango's with glee and hopefully not get beat!
Of course I can always go back to getting beat at darts after I finish this game...
I'm giving this one a perfect 10. If you are looking for an FPS on this platform, this one is awesome.
its not the greatest game, however..... December 30, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
it certainly is a good game. The graphics are nice(nothing spectacular, but they do look nice), and gameplay is fun. The controls do take a little time to find that "sweet spot"(holding it comfortably for extended periods of time). I am about halfway through, and I havn't encountered any bugs or anything. The game plays just fine. The single-cartridge multiplayer is pretty fun, but gets boring after awhile. This a great fps game for the ds, however, only get it if you dont have a next gen console.
Solid but short and buggy December 27, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Pros: Good sound, decent graphics. Simple fun. Physics are uninspired but if you have played CS 1.6 they are familiar. Mission objectives are well placed to get the most out of the ground levels. The explosives placement and disarming mini-games are fun. The AC-130 level is especially fun, and pleasantly unexpected given most modern combat games neglect this critical piece of air power. Weapon selection is minimal, but well rounded. 2 Assault rifles (M4 and AK47), 3 submachine guns (MP5, Mac-9 and Uzi) 1 shotgun, 1 pistol, RPG-7 in certain areas and 2 sniper rifles (Dragunov and Scout) and flash and frag grenades. I have not played the multiplayer.
Cons: Extremely short, almost too simple. The main storyline did not translate well from the console version as the cutscenes are replaced with well done but uninteresting comic book-like panels that poorly advance the story. There is a missing distinct feeling of scope and grandeur. Missions are more like arcade shooters, very 'rail' based and heavily scripted, only giving you one possible route through the map. The most tactically complex decision will be which side of a box to go around, and that is usually decided for you by the map design. The vehicle levels are the worst, no control over the vehicle at all, just the gun. Enemies are not static, and will miraculously appear where there were none before or were all killed sometimes spontaneously appearing if you move fast enough to beat the scripted event. AI is nonexistant, many enemies will take themselves out with their own grenades, and moving quietly to make the best tactical opportunity is impossible as the AI always knows where you are and starts shooting before you even come around the corner. This is especially frustrating when dealing with the snipers that kill in 1 shot. Clipping issues on many corners, enemies can damage you though corners but yet all your shots are blocked till you are well clear of the door or box. The touch screen controls are nice, but my hand tends to block too much of the screen at the extremes of the screen or when turning.
