Amazon.com Product Description
The first Motorstorm wowed fans with its heady formula of brutal, unpredictable off-road racing, festival vibes and stunning Monument Valley desert scenery. Now, Motorstorm Pacific Rift takes you to a solitary tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean, ready for a whole new take on no-holds-barred racing action through thick swamps, dense jungle, towering peaks and steaming volcanoes.

Not just pretty backdrops to the action, these environments take center stage in challenging players with everything in Mother Nature's arsenal. Thick mud, tangled undergrowth, swift flowing rivers, choking volcanic clouds and searing lava pools all test the drivers to their limits and beyond. Expect a rich festival of off road racing, along with a host of game modes and rewards. It's brutal, dangerous, relentless, and unpredictable and more than a game - Motorstorm Pacific Rift is a way of life.

Even More Vehicle Classes and Tracks
Pacific Rift ships with eight car classes: the seven from the original game (Bikes, ATVs, Buggies, Rally Cars, Racing trucks, Mud Pluggers and Big Rigs) all reproduced in new forms, as well as the new Monster Truck class. Big, but not as big or powerful as a Big Rig, Monster Trucks are surprisingly fast for their size and are able to roll over most other classes of vehicle and virtually any vegetation they encounter.

The game's list of playable tracks has also been doubled to 16 and are categorized along the lines of the elements and the different environmental zones are found on the island. These zones are:

  • The Air Zone - Tracks high up in the mountain and featuring lots of big jumps.
  • The Fire Zone - Track oozing with new land and pools of lava that come from the island's resident volcano.
  • The Water Zone - Here players will find courses laid out along the the beaches and other water sources of the island.
  • The Earth Zone - The typical rough, rocky mud-filled off-road courses similar to the tracks found in the original game.
Multiplayer Modes
In addition to the wild, anything goes singleplayer festival mode players of the originalMotorstorm game will remember and relish, Motorstorm Pacific Rift also provides addictive multiplayer modes for both online and local play. These include the same rampaging, music injected, 12-player online support as the first game, as well as multiplayer options for local action up to four players. Play in local multiplayer modes are further enhanced by new four-player split screen functionality that when used in conjunction with the game's 720p HD video output ensures clarity no matter how fast racers are moving or how much mud they are throwing up.

Key Game Features:

  • The Island - A brand new radically different location for the festival.
  • Unpredictable Events - Never the same race twice. Events will take place to change the race on a lap to lap basis.
  • Split Screen Play - Play with up to 3 buddies on the same screen.
  • The Monster Truck - An all new vehicle class added to the core vehicle selection for a total of 8 different vehicle classes.
  • Immersive Online Experience - A radical re-look at the whole Motorstorm online experience, focusing on ease of use and breadth of gameplay all while tearing it up in races up to 12 players.
  • Improved Actions - A new level of control; punch, duck and ram using a new control layout.
  • Free-play - Race how you want by creating your own race tickets.
  • Photo Mode - Snap your greatest victory or your most visceral crashes and share them with the world.
  • New Rating System - It's not all about winning; it's also about how you perform.
Bells and Whistles: Tunes and XMB Functionality
As was the case with the original Motorstorm, the driving experience in Pacific Rift can not be separated from the music that accompanies it. The game comes with a thumping 40 song soundtrack and players will also have the ability to pipe in their own playlists saved to their PS3 the ability to access others saved on your PS3's Hard drive. In addition for players who want to relive their moments tearing across the island, the game also features PlayStation 3 XrossMediaBar (XMB) functionality and Photo Mode. XMB lets plays create movies of their races and access them from the PS3's main menu, while Photo Mode allows you to take snapshots while within a race.

As you roll into the Rift, expect a rich festival of off road racing, along with a host of game modes and rewards. It's brutal, dangerous, relentless, unpredictable and much more than a game - Motorstorm Pacific Rift is a way of life.

5 out of 5 stars I don't usually comment, but....   November 18, 2008

for this item, I will make an exception. Let me preface by saying that I am not a game person. I use my PS3 for blu ray movies and blu ray movies only. Until now. I was at the local electronic store and saw some kid playing this game, and it looked pretty cool. I asked him what the name of it was and he told me. I saw the price on the game and did a double take. Like I said, I dont game often and certainly very little in the past 10 years, I am 32 years old, and didn't realize how much these things cost. Well I had just gotten a bonus at work, and decided to splurge a little and see just what all this gaming stuff on a PS3 is all about...go figure. Let me tell you that this is the first game that I actually get a sence of thrill from playing. Sitting close to my 46 hdtv and doing some of those jumps through canyons is exhillerating. The graphics are unlike anything ive seen and the movements seem to be pretty accurate.

So for you guys out there looking for a showcase game to show off your ps3, I highly recomment this one. I have to admit its pretty cool to waste a couple of hours on this thing and get that much more functionality out of the ps3.

Jeez i feel like a nerd.

5 out of 5 stars MotorStorm-aholic!!!!   November 13, 2008
I pre-ordered this game as soon as I could. I am so glad I did. I did not think they could make a better racing game than the first MotorStorm. Boy, was I wrong. I was addicted to the first one and now I am to the second also. I love MotorStorm!!!

There are some excellent reviews here, but I'll give some additional input from my week of owning this game. First, the graphics are better, but not leaps better. It's more of a different environment in my opinion that makes it look better than the original MS (I mean, how great can you get rocks, dirt, and mud to look?). Here, there is actual water texture that looks very realistic, both on the ground and falling from waterfalls. Driving through water or the falls will inhibit your visibility. In addition, lava scenes show heat refracting the light and distorting the ground and visibility, and the foliage is also outstanding and adds a sense of visual candy as well. These environmental factors really show off the graphics engine of the PS3.

Second, driving the vehicles themselves shows an improvement more towards the realism side. They tend to "push" more in turns and you need to learn to use the brake for straight-away braking and the e-brake for turns ("push" meaning the vehicle tends to want to go straight and doesn't respond well to steering input). Speed and braking management are crucial in this game unlike the original where you could just pretty much tear your way through tracks wide open.

Third, the idea of having four separate zones with each one having 20 or so challenges/races to complete offers a nice changeup to the original MS, which was much more linear in that you just graduated from one ticket to another with four different tracks/vehicles on each successive ticket. With MSPR, you can change to a different track of your choosing when you get tired of one zone and want a change of scenery. But the basic idea of the original MS graduating through four skill levels remains the same.

Fourth, the online gaming option is more limited as others have mentioned. Gone is the capability to scan through races and choose what you want. I suspect that this was partially to prevent "cherry pickers" who would scan races for easy pickings on n00bs and an easy win to up their ratings (yes, you "Gods" out there from the first one know who you are).

Lastly, let's give it up to a PS3 racing game that you can actually share with your friends on the same couch! When you have friends over or you take the box to your friend's house, it's just not real fun having them watch you play or you watch them take a turn and play. This was one of my early peeves about the PS3 racing game offerings - if you wanted to race a friend, he had to have his own machine at home and you raced him online. In my opinion, a large part of the fun of owning a console is competing with your buddy side by side, isn't it? And for anyone who never purchased the first game and considering it first before this, don't bother. The first several races in all four zones are easy enough for any green MotorStormer and you'll advance after practice.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift has roared it's way into stores in perhaps one of the most crowed points in gaming in recent memory. Huge titles like Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet, Fable 2 and many others all released around the same time as MS:PR. Sadly because of poor timing many will probably delay purchasing this game or end up skipping it altogether. Don't be one of those people and miss out on a terrific game!

MS:PR is a true sequel to the original breakout smash success. Capitalizing on all the experience from the first game, Evolution Studios returns with a bigger, better experience in MS:PR. Everything about the original MotorStorm has been improved, polished and soiled with mud.

The game features a more varied landscape than the simple desert setting of the original MotorStorm. Now players can select from 16 levels broken across four zones: Earth, Water, Fire and Air. As you can guess from the names, each features tracks dealing with the respective element. Levels vary from lush tropical jungles to simmering calderas to edge of your seat racing on the lip of a mountainous course. The track designs are amazing and conducive to white knuckle racing the series is known for.

Graphically few racing games shine as bright as MS:PR. Sure it may not be a photo realistic journey like GT5 Prologue. But then again GT5P doesn't have half the personality MS:PR has. The graphics in MS:PR are amazing. From levels which are both beautiful and grimy at the same time to detailed vehicles and impressive particle effects, the game has it covered.

Speaking of vehicles, MS:PR maintains the selection of Motorcycles, ATVs, Buggies, Rally Cars, Racing Trucks, Mudpluggers, Trucks and adds Monster Trucks to the fold. Somehow Evolution has managed to maintain balance throughout the classes and a slow moving Monster Trucks can (if raced correctly) maintain and beat a rally car. The game just works.

Major improvements to the single player offline mode feature a more diverse level set that spans 8 difficulty levels - or tickets as they're known in MotorStorm. As you progress through the tickets you'll unlock in game rewards such as vehicles paint schemes, driver skins and extras like concept drawings and behind the scenes movies. The game also fully takes advantage of Sony's trophy system and features 50 trophies to earn.

Anyone who played the original MS will probably recall the soundtrack that featured bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Wolfmother and Monster Magnet. While somewhat limited in song count the songs in the game fit the gritty racing perfectly. MS:PR continues the hard rock trend the original set and thankfully expands the track listing. While I found the selection of songs to be good, I can't help but miss hearing classic songs from the original game.

If I had to pick one element of MS:PR that is a bit disappointing I would pick the online racing portion. While certainly not bad, a few bad design choices keep the online mode from being great. The primary problem is that user options are extremely limited. You're allowed to select either a ranked or unranked match. After each race you're booted back out to the lobby to receive rank points and then have to select either a ranked or unranked match again. You can create a custom match and select your favorite tracks and vehicles, however, the matches are unranked and will not count toward your online rank. The online portion of the game is just a bit cumbersome and should give users the ability to create custom ranked races. To it's credit the game does implement a buddy system that will pair you with friends playing the game. Hopefully Evolution will hear the fans and patch the game to improve the online racing.

All in all MS:PR is an excellent game and a must have for PS3 race fans!

Best offroad racer out, period. I think they improved on the origional ten fold. The graphics are something to behold also. Great game and worthy of your time and money.
