Editorial Review No question about it: Doom is one of the greatest games of all time. The blend of a simple, yet compelling mission, breakthrough 3-D interface, brilliant level and weapon design, and the effective use of fear made Doom an instant classic and launched a revolution in computer games. Born on the PC, this game has been ported to almost everything imaginable, and the PlayStation port is one of the best. You play the part of a space marine who was stationed on a research station on the Martian moon, Phobos. Something went very wrong when the researchers opened an extradimensional portal. Now you're trapped far from home, grabbing guns and ammo to blast the demons. A one-man crusade, you shoot everything that moves--and, likewise, everything that moves tries to return the favor. This was the game that launched the multiplayer craze on the PC, and the PlayStation version does its best to live up to Doom's reputation as the ultimate multiplayer deathmatch game. If you have two players, two PlayStations, and a link cable, you can enjoy some mad two-player mayhem. A few words of caution: remember that Doom was the first wildly successful first-person shooter, and while its graphics were astounding for its era, it hasn't aged well. If you want the latest and greatest graphics, you'll be disappointed, but if you're into quality gaming and appreciate history, you'll still get a huge blast out of Doom. --John Cocking Pros: - Lots of mayhem
- Terror mounts as your ammo count drops
Cons: - Older graphics
- Nothin' but violence
- Sluggish when compared to the PC version

"Custom" Edition November 17, 2008 I had this version in the 90's and played it while a teenager. I now repurchased it and am playing it in 2008 as a 28 year old. It is STILL visceral, brooding and epic in its dark atmosphere. In some ways, the minimalist "3D" of the original DOOM (particularly in this port) lends itself well to the overall gloomy atmosphere. It creates a certain... menacing bleakness in the landscape.
One thing that REALLY makes this a DOOM to remember is the TOTALLY BENT, EPIC DRONECORE DARK AMBIENT SOUNDTRACK. Playing DOOM on my modern computer, despite the incredible graphics, just isn't quite the same without that HAUNTING soundtrack. Seriously, the soundtrack to this particular version of DOOM is so totally harrowing and visceral as to be nearly a moving life experience. You will never quite forget it after hearing it. The soundtrack is certainly one of the best of all time (for a video game). It is profoundly moody, unrelentingly heavy and completely out there. It sounds like something Steve Roach might create after surviving a journey through Hell and then having Trent Reznor as the music producer.
Overall, this is quite a good port over to the original Playstation. Original DOOM is an all time classic with brilliant level design and awesome action that set the standard for years. Pick up this version used and fade away into that crazy soundtrack from another level of existence...
OMG!!! July 27, 2008 This is my favorite game. I have played it over and over again. I love blowing demons up big time. If you are the movie DOOM fan and think this might be the same it isn't. XBox has the closest DOOM games in that perspective. I am old school w/ the PlayStation 1 my kids have all upgraded and I stayed w/ the PlayStation because I can not depart from this game. If you get this game and love it then you will have to get Space Invaders for the PlayStation. It is nothing like the old one from Atari it is almost as good as my DOOM.
this game was great April 2, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
doom for playstation is amazing, so good that i am purchasing it for the second time. it is revolutionary, a great advancement in graphics from its father game: wolf3d(another must have), the start of what is known today as "the first person shooter". while it originally was released on pc, and i used to own it on pc, both are good, but i prefer the ps1 version. it is more than one game in one so theres no switching discs. your playstation is not going to get a virus and crash, so you will always have the game(so long as you take care of the disc), and it runs quickly because playstations do not have to compete with other programs. the real bonus here though is the combination of doom 1, ultimate doom(an expansion pack), and doom 2. plus the fact of improved graphics from the very first release of doom, all the classic weapons and monsters, and a roiling good time!
krap-PS1 never had any good FPS games! February 26, 2006 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
DOOM was much better on Nintendo 64!-PS1 didn`t have FPS in their "Talent" genre-N64 did. The Three games machines that had the best FPS games genre as a "talent" was: PC NINTENDO 64 XBOX DOOM was ok on PS1 but not a good.
Now this is where the legend all began. November 17, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Doom and Quake have been two of the most incredible FPS series ever. Along with Turok and Half-Life, and even Medal of Honor, Doom is still one of my favorites. I don't even own it anymore, and last time I played it I was about six. While you were all watching Barney the dinosour, my dad and I were blasting demons with rocket launchers and taking out whole armies with a shotgun. I think Doom 3 is really just a remake of Doom 1, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd likely choose this one. Doom 3 is awesome and VERY addictive, but it's so realistic it tends to often freeze up a lot, and don't even get me started on Quake 4... But anyway, Doom was probably the first FPS game I ever played, although with my age, I wasn't really good at it at first. But if I were to play it now, I'd probably be halfway through the game in one day. I never even played Doom II, though my dad did show me the first level of it a long time ago. I wish ID would come out with another game like this, with a simpler story, and gameplay that's simple like this. I miss these old games a great deal, and not owning Doom anymore is beginning to hurt my brain. There's just no originality anymore with anything nowadays, it seems like too many things are stereotypical, or just plain typical. Old games are the best, and we need to make sure we get all the classic old games like this while we can, because they won't be there forever.
