FF fanboy May 16, 2008 I love final fantasy, so I can't hate it. Being objective though, this is a great portable fantasy whch makes me want to remake of four even more.
Possibly the worst in the Final Fantasy series, although not necessarily a bad game. April 6, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This game confuses me. Its got a lot of potential for a great game, but it just doesn't come through. I tried really hard to like this game, it is Final Fantasy. I guess there had to be at least one disappointing game in the series. The sound effects are pretty decent, its typically what you would expect from a Final Fantasy game. The graphics are pretty good for a hand held game, and vastly improved from the original. It has some added cut scenes which are alright I guess. The combat is really boring and unbalanced. Granted, i usually love turn based combat, but this was just terrible. The difficulty curve is idiotic. You have to use potions to just to survive in the beginning area. Then, they tell you to go somewhere you figure that means you should be strong enough to handle. Well that's really not the case in this game. They tell me to go to the castle, so I go to the castle. I run into some creatures and try to fight them but low and behold they one shot me and all my party members! I was really looking forward to playing this game, and it had all the basics of what I expect from a Final Fantasy game, but it fell flat on its face after that.
Final Fantasy III February 25, 2008 a good fun game overall, slow at the begining and difficult to accomplish begging tasks, but very fun.
Be prepared, be leveled, or be loading. February 17, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a fan of the Final Fantasy series, and having played through 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7, I figured I would pick up a copy of this game. I figured it would hold the excitement and fun of the previous ones. It does not :(.
Now I will say that the addition of CGI, new graphics, sound, music, etc. does add a whole lot to the atmosphere. I wasn't too big of a fan of the art style they choose for the characters, but it's not really a detractor. The game stayed pretty true to the original from what I have read, and I like that in a game.
Now there are a few parts that take this great game down from a 5 star to merely a 3 star. For one, the secret weapons and what not require you to actually have met people online and send messages to them over your DS. That seems a little extreme to me to find game secrets. A big pain though is finding hidden items or places. You need to constantly zoom in and out of your view to find secret sparkles to tell you where hidden things are. It is a clever idea, but becomes more of a pain than an exciting feature.
Now I'm going out on a limb here, but I am going to say that I can see why this game and FF V never made it to the States. Honestly, the complexity of the game, punishment for poor preparedness, need to grind, and weak story line really made these title fall flat for me.
For one, the story just doesn't intrigue me. Somebody cursed everyone and we need to kill him to lift it, escort me to town X, run from a boss or you'll die. It's all so simple, and I do give it a little slack because FF 1 and FF 2 were similar, but with the enhancements done to it, they could have at least spiced up the dialog or something to add interest.
Next let's talk about the class system. What a GREAT idea. No really, it is. Poorly executed, but a great idea. You start off with a weak, no focus class, and then get more class options for your characters as you go on. You can also switch classes on the fly (albeit with a bit of a waiting period), but it is useful. That's where the great idea stops. The reality is, there are only a handful of useful classes, and many others will just waste your time. Instead of being like modern games, where most classes are useful if you play, equip, and level them right, this is just not so in FF3. In here, some classes are great, some are ok, and some are terrible. Unless you want to get friends on the DS network and earn all the super duper weapons, and grind (focus on killing monsters for experience) until the stars grow dim, I suggest you pick the GOOD classes.
The final straw comes with the areas. Did you forget to by 30 golden needles to remove petrification? Oops, your whole party gets turned to stone and you die. Forgot to save at the bottom? Tack on another 30 minutes of catchup every time you forget to save at EVERY SINGLE area.
Overall the game is fun, the graphics are good and appropriate, the music is a bit repetitive, but it is pleasant. Sadly a few major flaws will force you to repeat areas, grind a bunch, and read online class guides in order to play this game to its potential. I would say this game is worth borrowing from a friend, or renting (if you can rent DS games) and beating. Don't waste your $20-$30 on this one.
When will we get a true port of FF III?! February 13, 2008 0 out of 26 found this review helpful
I felt I needed to rate this game due to poor porting.
-->First mistake, porting the only Final Fantasy game that was never released here in the states on a handheld instead of a main console. -->Second mistake, completely overhauling everything. Simply up the graphics to SNES standards. It's originally a NES game. It's not truly a classic port if things are changed to much. No need for 3D grpahics or extra quests and dungeons if the original didn't have them. -->Thirdly, Final Fantasy I & II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII were all released on the playstation. Why wasn't Final Fantasy III?
All in all, I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this one. If they would just properly port it to the PS or Nintendo Wii without changing anything except maybe bringing the 2D graphics to SNES quality. Or simply use 256 colors instead of 16.
Special Note: I would actually like to see them port Final Fantasy I thru Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest onto the Nintendo Wii :)
