Repetitive and Simple September 9, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
As a huge word game fan, I was very disappointed in how repetitive this game actually is with the clues. At first glance, the game seemed challenging, but after spending a couple of hours playing this game, it became easier and easier to solve the clues. This might be a fun game for young teens, but beyond that, it's pretty much a waste of money and time.
wordmaster September 7, 2008 A bit easier than I thought it would be, but still very fun and engaging.
What! Only two word games? September 2, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
That's my first thought when I got the Wordmaster DS. There's only TWO games on there! Wordmaster and Anagrams.
I don't know, I guess I got the impression that there was going to be alot of word games. My mistake.
With that said, the two games are fun. I enjoyed the games. They give you clues to guess what the word is which helps alot.
If you like word games, especially Anagrams, this is for you. If you are looking for a bunch of variety games, look elsewhere. They should have added some more games such as hangman maybe? Or some other word fun.
small complaint August 31, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I am a huge word game fan, so I picked this game up knowing very little about it. My major complaint is that, unlike other games that turn the DS sideways to use, there is no left-handed option on this game so I find myself sometimes covering up my gameboard with my hand as I write. Just a bit disappointing. (Yes, there is an option to click on letters instead of writing them by hand... but I'm so much more comfortable using my left hand even for that.)
And now I have a headache August 27, 2008 Even though I love words and language and literature, there's something about my brain that's just not wired right to solve anagrams or fill in crossword puzzles.
(I try to do the Jumble every day, and can usually get 2 or 3 of the words unscrambled. But then I hit a wall, and end up tossing the paper away in disgust at my own obtuseness.)
Put simply: this is a challenging game, more so if you're a numbskull like me. The Wordmaster piece of the game is sort of like doing a crossword puzzle, but without the hints that start to take shape as you fill in the other clues in the puzzle. The initial clues you receive are brief and oftentimes hint at the answer in a terribly roundabout way. You may find yourself shouting out to family members as you play, reading them the clues and asking for their guesses.
If you like solving anagrams, doing crossword puzzles, or playing word games in general, you'll like this game. It will test the limits of your vocabulary and deductive skills. It's definitely not for children, with the exception of those Doogie Howser-style whiz kids who graduate Harvard at age 14.
As for me, I'm hoping that by playing this game, it will help whip my brain into shape so that I can do better at the Word Worm sections of the Cranium board game (my main weakness, aside from the clay sculpting, and I've accepted the fact that my sculptures are never going to get any better, aside from when I'm asked to do "snake").
