Not what I was expecting May 2, 2008 I rented this game from gamefly and i was a little dissapointed. I took a look at the reviews and thought this was going to be a great game. Right at the start i could tell that they must be blind. The game has a lame storyline. The aiming/shooting controls are terrible and lame. The story is sooooooo long. you talk to people more than actually playing the game. You get lame crappy weapons. Theres no reloading just a heat sensor. The reason why is gave 3 stars instead of 2 or 1 is that i bought it for $10 and its not a total waste of time. The graphics are insanely amazing. I would say its better than some games, but is not as good as people say it is. My buddies also say the same thing about this game and how poor it is.
Huge Disappointment April 28, 2008 After playing KOTOR and Jade Empire and absolutely loving them, I was really looking forward to this game. However, after about nine hours of gameplay, I'm ready to trade it in for something else. I found the combat mechanics incredibly frustrating on foot, and once I got in a Mako...well, that was all she wrote. It was impossible for me to drive and aim and shoot at enemies that can hit you from downhill but you can't shoot down at them, so you drive down to your death. Judging by the walkthrough I checked out after throwing my controller down in frustration, the turrets I was facing are kittens compared to some of the other enemies.
I should state here I am not very good at fast combat decisions, especially if I have to aim and then shoot. Some games make this process intuitive, like the Halo series and numerous others, but this one doesn't. You aim with the left stick (you look with the right!) and pull the right trigger to shoot. I don't understand why the looking and aiming couldn't have been meshed together, like, say, in Half Life 2. This is what made combat pretty frustrating, if not impossible for me, even after I set the game on the easiest difficulty. I really missed the turn based combat option and auto target from KOTOR. Why couldn't they have made those an option in this one as well? It would have worked and those who want to play real time and deal with aiming could do so. Heck, I would've been happy with the combat mechanics in Halo. Give me an indestructible vehicle and a rocket launcher and I'll take those turrets out, no problem!
At any rate, I'll give the pros and cons of this game as I see them:
PROS Fantastic voice acting Good graphics Engaging storyline Less confusing level up choices than KOTOR
CONS Overly difficult combat (esp. for those not quick on the draw) Long load times (elevator rides, anyone?) Cumbersome menu system No turn based or auto target combat options Insanely long dialogues that can become boring Limited interaction with your squad members Inability to control squad members well
To sum it up, this is a game that had great potential but is unplayable unless you're really good at manipulating your controller quickly and have great patience for a lot of saves and reloads. Oddly, I had no trouble at all with the open minigame, and a lot of people hated that. I've played a lot of videogames, including both FPS and RPG, and this one was probably on my top five most frustrating list. If you hate minigames (all opening of locked containers is either that or using your potentially saleable items to create a goo to open them) and obnoxious combat physics that include driving vehicles that blow up after five hits, avoid Mass Effect.
Ok April 27, 2008 I've played both Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. So this review is from a point of view of someone very familiar with Bioware's previous products.
Pros: - Visually the most impressive of Bioware's products. KOTOR was groundbreaking visually and ME kicks it up a notch. - Turn-based combat is replaced with real-time. - Impressive amount of dialog and side quests. - Character design is a significant improvement.
Cons: - Combat mechanic is not fully satisfying. Use of biotic powers isn't as satisfying an experience as say Force powers in a Star Wars game. - The Tower's of Hanoi puzzle was in KOTOR and it is again in this game. Please Bioware, stop putting this puzzle in your games. It's terribly boring as a puzzle, especially for computer scientists. Shows real lack of imagination. - Apart from the visuals and the new attempt at a combat scheme, there really isn't much new from KOTOR and Jade Empire. - KOTOR gave you multiple solutions to a problem. E.g. in KOTOR you can either bully your way through everything or solve puzzles. ME seems more limited. - The planetary side quests are not terribly rewarding. The environments are small and after a while you avoid all but the main quests. - Equipment management becomes unwieldy as the amount of upgrades increases. Becomes royal pain to discard your upgrades when you have accumulated a lot of them. - Cannot control individual characters, only your own. So you don't get a sense that your other team members have any real impact. Ie squad-based interactions are very weak. In general you just let them do their default actions.
A great game April 21, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is overall one of the best games to have come out in a long time, it successfully combines multiple styles of game play to satisfy everybody. The plot in the game is on par with Hollywood a-list movies, and the replay value is extremely high. You will feel that your actions in the game really have a profound impact on what is happening in the game world, and not just going through the motions like other games. This is one title that unless you have an attention span of a two year old you will enjoy immensely.
Boring, poorly designed story April 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The graphics are beautiful. Now that is out of the way, there are too many problems with this game to give it a good rating.
You will sit through copious dialogue that you cannot skip through. At one point, after rescuing a scientist in a mine, you encounter a standoff with the enemy geth and a krogon. You will die here. Many times. There's no cover and if you are not playing as a soldier you really have no resources to defend yourself. I can handle dying in a game, it happens all the time. Problem is, in this game you have to sit through about 3 minutes of dialogue to get to the spot where you will die. Do that ten times! Yeah, 30 minutes of the same dialogue over and over will bore you. The developers made some very poor decisions about save point/load point placement.
Another problem is the idea that your character cannot use certain weapons because you are "untrained." Untrained to weild a shotgun? Are you kidding? Your character is a career fighter, but never spent a day learning to aim a rifle or shotgun? This forces you to select the soldier character class, a wasted opportunity. The sniper rifle function has its problems, too; specifically it fails to register hits from certain distances as though the enemy target is not distinguished from the background it's standing against.
While this game gives the impression of a vast, open-ended, sandbox type of game, it is actually very linear. Most of the choices available to you are false choices with no impact on the outcome or direction of the story. The story is going to go where it will, regardless of what your character says or does.
Mass Effect is basically a boring, frustrating game. There are tons of RPG and third person shooters that are better than this one.
