I read a lot more with the Kindle than before it. July 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'll admit it. I have not been a book person. I drop bookmarks. I lose my page. I'm annoyed by bindings that try to close on me while I'm reading. I want to remember quotes from books, but can't find them when I want to. I want to look up words while I'm reading... and I drop my bookmark, etc. I also am really bad at picking out books at a bookstore, and I rarely get out to shop in one. I also do not enjoy reading on a computer. I haven't met an interface for that yet that I like.
Economically, the Kindle doesn't make sense to me. As a luxury, though, it's terrific. It's the interface. I love it.
The leather case is a nice touch. I use it to carry the Kindle around and for quick reading when I'm waiting for someone or something. When I'm doing lengthy reading, though, I like taking it out of the case. It's lighter and less bulky, then.
I have no problem with the button placement. I hold it with my thumb under the screen, so it's not touching any buttons and then there's a quick move to push for the next page. I typically push the button just before reading the last phrase so the screen refresh happens just as I finish the last word. It's quicker than turning a real page, that way.
I downloaded a pile of samples and weeded out a lot that I didn't want to buy. That said, I did wind up buying a lot more books than I normally would. I can see why Amazon likes this thing.
I bought an e-book on a topic I could not get for the Kindle. I downloaded it as a .pdf and then mailed it to the Kindle. I read it on the Kindle. I still have it on my computer, but I'm not really tempted to read it there much. The Kindle has my highlights and notes, and since it is a rather technical publication, that'll help me find the parts I need to get back to later.
I'm near-sighted. I find myself using either the smallest or next-to-smallest font in order to see more text with fewer page turns. Held close, it is very clear. For those who need reading glasses, I can see how the larger fonts would be useful, but I find even the smallest font quite legible. The larger fonts come in handy in lower light conditions. I have used a book light and it works quite well, though I don't always carry that with me.
If I had a choice between reading something in paperback or Kindle, the Kindle wins hands down. A nice, leather-bound hard-cover book with a good, flexible binding and nice paper has its sensual pleasures that would compete with the Kindle, but it would still be a contest. Color pictures, when applicable, could beat out the Kindle, but that's not usually what I'm after when I read a book.
Kindle Book Reader July 5, 2008 I bought the Kindle about a month ago and it is fantastic! I have finished about four books and have downloaded about eight books. I travel alot and I find it so easy to carry it and use on the plane. Also with the wireless feature off the books last me the entire week without recharging. It is my best purchase of 2008!
The books download quickly and so far I have run into no problems. I also like that the books cost much less than the printed version.
My only negative is that some books are not on the system yet. As example, books like Evanovich "Fearless Fourteen" is not on Kindle but the older "13" book is avalible. Other examples include no Harry Potter books nor some classics like "To kill a Mockingbird" are not on the Kindle list
Almost perfect July 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love my Kindle, despite its imperfections. These mainly are the forward buttons get pressed accidently way too much... and page turns are a bit slow, breaking the illusion. But I knew I was hooked by even the second reading session. Several times I caught my hand moving to the top-right corner of the display to turn a physical page... The illusion is nearly perfect.

I absolutely love my Kindle. I have long ago run out of space for books and hate to get rid of them. With kindle I can keep my books and take up no space at all. The book and subscription availability is great and I always have something new to read (and choices of what to read next) when I finish my current book. Books are generally cheaper and more readily available and going paperless is great for the environment! I also think Amazon's customer service and tech support is outstanding. It's well worth the price. This is one of my best purchases ever and I recommend it to all who love to read.
Two Librarians Love the Kindle July 5, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
My wife and I are librarians, so we give each other book gifts often. She finds she reads more books more quickly with her new Kindle ( and I thought she read fast before!). She usually has several books going at once , and with the Kindle she always has them all with her. She never loses time looking for where she last left off in any of them.
The screen is very readable: she forgets she's reading on a device. The weight is manageable for the heaviest book (think McCullough's "John Adams"). Adjustable font size makes large print reading possible. Built in dictionary makes it easy to look up unfamiliar words (though guessing from context is always kind of fun).
Having access to new titles via Whispernet has been neat. She loved being able to download a new book on the bus ride home from the city.
Downsides? The bar to advance to the next screen is easy to hit by mistake. And she finds that hitting that bar is giving her "Kindle thumb". As librarians we balk a bit at having to buy everything to read on it. Sure does make reading easy though.
