Outstanding Graphics
Ubisoft developed the Dunia Engine specifically for Far Cry 2. Among other things, the Dunia Engine delivers realistic, interactive environments, special effects, real-time night-and-day cycles, and smart enemy AI.

Expansive, Realistic Environment
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional region of Africa where you are caught between two rival factions at war. The Ubisoft team spent a lot of time filming and photographing in Africa to get all the details of the landscape and native wildlife. The result is a huge gameplay area that is 50 square kilometers, taking players into and out of the jungle and savannah. Wild animals such as zebras, buffalo, gazelle are encountered during the game, with both players and enemies allowed to interact with them.

Far Cry 2 features an incredible level of detail and realism, with a minimal in-game interface to detract from immersion. For example, players will need to navigate the world using an in-game map and navigation system, weapons will disintegrate over time, and fires will spread and propagate.

Each of the actions a player takes is reflected in the environment and changes the content of the game. To fulfill your mission, you need to play the enemies against each other, using both strategy and skill.

Huge Range of Weapons and Vehicles
Far Cry 2 offers gamers a wide range of weapons, from a machete for hand-to-hand combat, to a sniper rifle that can stealthily pluck off enemies from afar. As weapons disintegrate over time, they might jam or even explode in your hand.

There are also a large range of vehicles such as gliders, trucks, cars, and boats that will let you fly, drive, slide, and hover over the open landscapes.

Multiplayer Options for up to 16 Players
Far Cry 2 supports up to 16 players and has four gameplay modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond, and Uprising. Players can choose from six different classes in multiplayer, each with its own set of pros and cons. Just as in the single-player mode, multiplayer games will feature dynamic elements, making each session unique.

4 out of 5 stars why so many bad reviews   December 2, 2008

I played this game a few weeks ago, then I looked at the reviews here and I am surprised at the bad response. (currently there are about 87 1 star)

The game has a lot of good points. There are flaws in the execution of the game, but for a rating, it must be compared to other recent games. It does not deserve a '1' star rating. I play a lot of PC games, I can say that while Far Cry 2 is not perfect, it is better than a lot of other games. It plays out something like the GTA series. The missions can be frustrating when you have to fight your way forward and back through the same locations you have already cleared, but that is the way the game was designed.

The game should not really have the 'Far Cry' name as you may expect the same story line or characters. It has nothing to do with the prior game. The game looks very good, it plays well, it has a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The main story is not that compelling, but you can pick up the game and play for 30 minutes and enjoy that time.

One thing I think is worth experiencing is the chatter of the npc's (enemy AI) as you hide in the brush. They say some of the most hilarious things.

1 out of 5 stars SecuROM - "We Kill The PC"   December 1, 2008

SecuROM - a sure, instant way of providing death to PC gaming as we know it. Sure, game companies would like to provide protection against software pirates, but let's make a couple of things clear:

1. Sorry, Ubi. If you think that pirates are not going to think their way around this one, think again.
2. SecuROM interferes with my burner. I do a LOT of home video creation with Sony Vegas Pro ($500+ software). Do you think that I'm going to WANT to install a $49 software package that's going to ruin that, not to mention the hell-on-earth experience of REMOVING this piece of junk? Even if it were in the discount bin at $9.95, I would never even dream of creating an afternoon of fun trying to fix my hardware again.

I am very sad to say that I will not be purchasing Far Cry 2. I was soooo looking forward to this game, but SecuROM is an instant turn-off. I don't pirate games, so for some person to wreck my hardware set-up with inept software because they don't trust ME doesn't earn my business.

Mark my words - if the PC gaming industry continues on this path, it will spell a slow but sure death to PC gaming as we know it. There must be an easier way - and SecuROM isn't it. Perhaps they should call it SecuROT?

I am going to enjoy my original, legal purchase of Far Cry now.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I Bloody Liked It!!!   December 1, 2008

Sadly I am too dumb to understand all the protection stuff, I bought this game because I loved FC 1 and this sounded interesting.

I am about half way through it and think that is sufficient to offer a view on if it is worth getting as it is a complex and surprisingly involving game. It is different from the original as it is a blend of FPS and role play set in a vast African landscape. You arrive to kill a gun dealer but things go wrong and you end up taking a variety of jobs to keep you in medicine and weapons until such time as you may get the chance to catch up with said gun dealer.

This is not a linear or structured game - you very much do what you want and when you want and that is the joy really. I started off not overly enjoying it and suddenly 'got' what it was all about and now I am addicted.

You need medicine and weapons to survive, diamonds are the currency of trade and you either find them hidden away on the vast map or you earn them through taking on a variety of missions, all of which allow you to build up the quality of your weapons and your reputation. You make friends (buddies) and if you help them, they might rescue you when you are in deep trouble. Weapons vary in quality, they might break or jam on you and you are going to need them because most people will shoot at you on sight. You can travel on foot, by vehicle/boat (there are loads all over the place) or bus. There are safe houses where you can recover (and save), there are gun dealers where you can upgrade weapons, it all feels very real and involving. Let me give you an example of where I am currently.
In order to buy better weapons I have taken a mission to kill a Police Chief. I could have tracked down his convoy and battled it out, but one of my buddies gave me a better option, so I am on my way to steal a ledger from the chief's brother which will scare the chief into hiding and make it easier to track him down and for my buddy to steal some weapons from him (and give me a share). So I am about to shoot up a village to get to the brother, then I will pinch some sort of transport to get over to where the chief is hiding, take him out, work with my buddy to share the spoils and then decide what to do next. And so on.

Minor gripes are the bad guys that re-spawn road-blocks, but now I understand that in the real world, road blocks would be re-manned and they are an opportunity to get ammo and vehicles. And some enemies can take an awful lot of fire before they go down....

The other point is that you actually start to care, when you do missions for no reason but to help people out, you feel good about it, when you rescue a buddy who needs help (or if they end up dying) it matters to you, they have become more then just characters.

So I think this is a classic, but this is not a game you play, it is a game you immerse yourself in.

1 out of 5 stars Installs SecuROM on your computer   November 29, 2008

Getting SecuROM off your computer is a major pain as it creates registry keys with weird null characters in them, and files that can't be easily deleted. I had to find third party programs to get SecuROM off my computer. I will Google SecuROM and the name of any game I buy from now on to make sure the spyware that is SecuROM isn't on anything else I buy.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype!   November 28, 2008

Too much publicity, not enough guts. The original Far Cry is much better. Not as much useless running around and the graphics are far superior.
