Features:
  • The Skill Stick gave you the power to deke the goalie in NHL 07 - now you can own the 1-on-1 matchup and undress opposing defenseman with complete control Use your stick to push the puck into space and walk around your defender. Once you're all alone in front, improved stick handling and shooting accuracy will give you the toolset to beat your goaltender for that decisive goal.
  • AI adjusts to your every move both on offense and defense, promising to challenge even the most skilled hockey players. The intelligent CPU scouts your tendencies like a coach and makes the necessary adjustments to shut down your money plays, forcing you to adjust your style of play
  • Take any team into practice mode and train them to run custom rush and in-zone plays in game. Do you want your team to run cycle plays down low? Or feed the point for a one-timer? Record the exact movements of each player in practice mode and watch as your team's AI executes them in gameplay
  • New analog speed control of the left stick gives you the variance you need to glide into the zone with control or get a burst of speed to step up on a defender. With new skating animations and responsiveness, you have the control to perform crossovers to maintain speed or carve tight turns for an immediate change in direction
  • 29 AHL teams - the top developmental league for the NHL - are exclusively featured and fully playable. Develop your talent with their minor affiliate until you are ready to call them up for the show. Be the GM and manage your team from the ground up while staying under the salary cap.

5 out of 5 stars Best Hockey game, but. . .   August 29, 2008
Rather than write a lengthy review, I'll just put the pros and cons in my own opinion.

Pros: Offense and defense sets up in zones automatically. Positioning is extremely important in Defensive zone.
The most realistic NHL game I've played.
great graphics
The opponent's goalie will challenge you.

Cons: I don't know if it's my xbox or the game, but it freezes/restarts/disc unable to read errors frequently.
The music soundtrack is awful, some of the songs are ridiculously stupid, and sometimes extremely annoying.
Half the time your goalie wont even try to stop the puck, so don't count on them being any help. I suppose I could make my own goalie tho.....
The Refs will always be biased against your team, so you'll be on the PK more than on the PP.

5 out of 5 stars This is awesome!!! Screw Play Station 2! I'm buying an XBox 360. A true gaming experience!   May 8, 2008

I don't have XBox 360, but for those that do and are interested in purchasing NHL 08' who haven't, don't hesitate! I played this with my boyfriend at his house on his XBox 360 and now I want an XBox! It makes gaming a lot more fun and exciting, especially NHL 08'. The graphics are more realistic, you have control if you play against the CPU. You vs. CPU is good even multi player is good. I didn't find any delays as they are typical in the older versions of NHL when there is too much action going on around the net and goal tenders-not the case this time! The background music is better to listen to. The commentators this time around are right on target. I found with the older versions the commentators would be saying something not even related to the current actions and would cause confusion. Playing shoot out mode is more fun! I love how you have more control on your team players skating/movement and the skill drills are fun too! The skill drills improve your over all playing skill. I recommend this to anyone as I'm very picky when it comes to gaming such as this! Playing this game on XBox 360, makes my PS2 NHL 08' go to the bottom of the list in ratings. Don't think about it if you are a hockey fan and love hockey, buy it! You won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Crunch and shoot...   March 16, 2008
I've not owned a version of NHL in several years, but it didn't matter.

Instantly recognizable and playable for the NHL veteran and the newbie, this is an excellent job by EA of updating the game and making some serious improvements. As others have noted, the AI is pretty up to snuff, actually being competent, sharp and tough. The defense swarms, the computer-controlled D poking, bumping, and of course making bone-crunching, somersault-causing checks. They put up opposition, in short, as do the goalies who are generally very, very good.

The game looks fantastic, even without HDTV graphics. All of the faces, arenas, and almost too many uniform options (you can change the player's gloves, helment and stick to a different brand?) Absolutely addictive, all of the previous action is here but vastly improved. One-timers, slappers, beat-downs, insane saves, and even fights have returned. Oddly, though, they seem to have done away with five-minute majors (except for the rare fighting), and double minors, and some penalties altogether (goalie interference, and boarding). Also, it seems like faceoffs get dominated by one team over the other quite often. But these are minor gripes when you look at the whole game.

There's a dynasty mode that is clearly for obsessists, as you control the team, the minor league affiliate, the books, the salary cap, the morale, etc. In addition to the NHL and Olympic teams, there's the entire AHL, as well as the Finnish league and Swedish league. Plenty of small gem teams and players to find.

Highly recommended game for XBoxers. Completely addictive, and this time with a very competent computer that will have you swearing at the screen as Finland runs up the score.

5 out of 5 stars Great game for real hockey players   February 16, 2008
I owned NHL 07, and enjoyed the skill stick, however, there were several things that drove me nuts about the game overall. I would drive into the zone and drop the puck back to my defensmen at the point only to discover them wandering around the neutral zone. Similarly, I'd bring the puck across center ice and watch some knucklehead wander offsides. If you actually play real hockey (or watch it) you'd appriciate my frustration. 2 on 1's were useless, as your teamate often stops altogether or skates too far in (past the goal line). Rebounds (a critical part of the game) were all but non-existant. Also there was no practice session (other than the tedious shoot outs) for figureing out how to use the skill stick.

Well NHL 08 fixed these problems and added several more features, making it the best all around hockey game (or any sports) game I've ever played. Your teamates play pretty good position. You can pass around the perimeter, back to the point, etc. Breakouts look great. 2on1s are meaningful. Getting a loose puck in front of the net is often productive. The goalie is much more a part of the defense. There is a nice practice session to help you figure out the skill stick and develop plays. The graphics are improved (your reflections disapear as the ice deterioriates through each period, but your shadow remains). The skating mechanics are much more realistic - fluid and graceful, although this may be frustrating to gamers who want instant response (however unrealistic that is in real hockey). I don't know how non-hockey playing gamers like this game, but as someone who's played serious ice hockey (high school, college, and now old-man league) I love this game.
