A game worthy of the ages May 1, 2008 Super Punch Out comes from a long line of Nintendo games that's easy to learn how to play, but challenging enough to keep you entertained for hours. The first fight teaches you the basics: punching, blocking, dodging, and the variations on the Super Punch. Soon, you'll get so good, you almost feel sorry for Gabby Jay.
Then the challenge kicks in with the next person. As with the original Punch Out, this game requires the gamer to learn the patterns of their opponent. But unlike the original Punch Out, you can be aggressive and beat the holy heck out of them without needing to only counter-punch after dodging. This makes Super Punch Out a step above the original by far.
The graphics were good for its time. Don't expect realistic graphics when playing this game. Just as the cover, it resembles some sort of cartoon with every character existing larger than life. But this is normal for Nintendo at that time. The game's just goofy fun, so the graphics reflect that.
My only minor complaint on the game is the lack of Rounds. The gamer only has one round to destroy his/her oppponent. Fortunately, this is more than enough time. But still, I enjoyed the three rounds from the original Punch Out.
The game will not take very long to beat and it has some good replay value. If you have the chance, purchase it.
Knock em out the box! February 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I loved Super Punch-Out when it first came out and I play this one once in a blue moon. Instead of a boxer named Mac, you have a boxer you have to give a name. The good points of this game are plenty: Your rapid punches and super hooks are devastating to your opponent, you can gain back your energy bar by pressing buttons(after you lay your opponent out of course), you have a good time beating the snot of these guys etc. The bad points are plentiful too. A lot of these opponents cheat. Dragon Chan KICKS you while you're fighting(Disqualify him now!),Hoy Quarlow hits you with his staff, Mad Clown throws balls at you in the middle of the match, Heike Kegaro hits you with his, her or it's hair, one of them spits in your face blinding you temperarily etc. Super Macho Man is one of the most annoying opponents in the game. When he's not flexing his muscles in your face like a fruit cake, he throughs a hook that knocks you out immediately. At one time, he threw that spinning hook at me SEVEN TIMES(and the seventh one caught me)! The most exruciating out of all your opponents is definitely the Bruiser brothers, Rick and Nick. I cant complain too much because I've beat the game a few times and Narcis Prince is a nancy boy. In short, Super Punch-Out is better than its predecessor, Mike Tyson's Punch Out and is recommended to any fan of boxing video games. LONG LIVE SUPER NES!!!
Fun, frustrating and addicting January 1, 2008 Despite the fact the Super Nintendo had big amounts of classic games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (VI to everyone else) and Super Metroid, the system had a great amount of party games that you can play with friends and just have fun. Super Punch-Out! was one of those games since you could take turns playing each fighter, or see who could best the other's time when playing time attack mode. However, the game, like a lot of the older games, was hard and at times unbelievably frustrating at parts.
Story: You're basically a boxer going through the different circuits which range from wimpy, average fighters to championship-caliber players who hit hard and fast. It's a boxing game so there's not really much of a story to begin with and fighters get their own little pre-fight quote/taunt.
Graphics: The graphics, while outdated, work extremely well in the game as your fighter, transparent except for his gloves, faces off against the different fighters who face you. Some of the taunts and moves they do is actually quite funny and unlike some games, the graphics support the game rather than stylize it without the gameplay there.
Sound/Music: The different fighters have different themes to go along with them and have small voice clips sometimes. Gabby Jay, for example, will open the match with a "yay!" and when he's about to get his big punch in, he goes "come on!" It's nothing to impressive but at least it gets the job done (although personally, I like listening to music while playing).
Gameplay: One of my least favorite things in a game is a huge sense of difficulty in that the game almost seems to be better than you and upon beating a level/boss/fighter, rather than feel elated and proud, you get frustrated that it took so long. The first 2 circuits are simple and nothing too difficult but then you hit those last 2 and oh my god, talk about frustration. Punches pack a wallop, they defend more and usually seem to know what you're about to do. If you could beat the special circuit without dying on any of them, hats off.
As for the gameplay itself, you have your body blows which hits their stomach and jabs for the face with a special punch should you fill up a meter after you get successful punches enough without getting hit. Enemies have a unique-but-limited move list so it's just simply a case of figuring out the patterns and know what to duck, what to counter and how to exploit them. But ultimately the game's not challenging because of time restraints (although you do have 3 minutes) or because of enemy strength/speed but because your guy doesn't dodge/duck quick enough and there was times where I'd dodge the first and second attacks only to get hit anyway by the second that I was supposed to be dodging. It's minor but in the heat of battle...(heh), it gets on your nerves.
If you can even track it down, I'd highly recommend it as its quite fun but those with low blood pressure and get easily frustrated might wanna stay clear, or at least prepare yourself.
Quick Knock Outs Make This Game Great June 20, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This game is quite a bit easier to complete than the NES version. It's not quite as classic or memorable as the original, but it's still a great game. It's really fun to figure out how to beat each of the characters. After some practice, you can get good enough to score some very quick knock-outs. It's darn fun trying to get a new fastest knock-out time for each character.
The rapid-punching option is certainly a marked improvement over the NES version, and I rarely shy away from using it. I love using the rapid-punches, I love beating the goofy characters, and therefore, I love this game.
