5 out of 5 stars Donny Yankellow's MyMac.com Review   August 22, 2008
Most Macs come with built-in iSight cameras nowadays. However, if you have a Mac Mini or a tower, you don't get a camera. You are on your own to find one. The IceCam2 is an affordable solution to that missing piece of your computer. Even those with a built-in camera might want to give this one a look.

The IceCam2 is a huge improvement over the original IceCam. The IceCam2 rotates left to right and up and down. This makes it a very attractive option for those with built-in cameras that have a limit to how much they can be adjusted. Since my baby was born in March I have been doing a lot of video chatting. It is very difficult getting him into the picture by tilting the iMac screen or holding him up to the exact spot. The IceCam2 makes that A LOT easier. I just have to clip it right onto my iMac and aim at the baby.

With a resolution of 640x480, the picture quality is great, and it also has a built-in microphone (a great addition for those on the Mini or towers).

Set up is a piece of cake. It is plug and play so you plug it in and go. No drivers are needed (unlike the original IceCam). With a 5 foot long USB cable, there is plenty of room for play in setting it up. When you open iChat the IceCam2 automatically becomes the default camera and default microphone. Unplug the camera and it is back to your built in iSight (if you have one).

The IceCam2 does not work with Photo Booth, but if you think about it you really need the built-in camera for that. Photo Booth uses the screen as a flash and you have to have the camera pointed directly at you. I'm not even sure Photo Booth comes with the machines without the built-in cameras.

At $39.99 the IceCam2 is a bargain for those needing a camera for their computer. The price also makes it very attractive and affordable for those wanting a second option to the built-in iSights.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money   July 29, 2008

Had the cam up and running in OS X 10.5.3 and XP SP2 in minutes. And the overall design isn't bad for the money. However, the video quality is completely unacceptable. Anything in the room that didn't suffer from glare was cast in almost total shadow. I thought the original Icecam had lighting issues, but that's nothing compared to this. PC users have plenty of other, much worthier options, and should not hesitate to take this product off their comparison lists.

4 out of 5 stars For the price, an excellent web cam and microphone   July 19, 2008

I recently purchased this item, the IceCam2, and have been using it extensively. Firstly, be aware this is both a microphone and a webcamera - some webcams you purchase do not have a microphone included. By and large this is an excellent webcam/microphone for someone looking to do casual internet chatting. I currently use AIM's video mode and chat with friends. The quality of the sound is adequate for such purposes. The video is good as well; adequate lighting seems necessary; this is in contrast to say the MacBook Pro's built in iSight which I've been able to capture good quality videos even in the dark. Using the IceCam2 I generally need quite good illumination; even then the color representation is a little suspect as well, but let's face it: for the price the image quality is really just fine. I say color representation is off - maybe your skin has a paler complexion than usual, maybe it's a little reddish. Nothing extremely off. All in all, this product succeeds in conveying the gist of the video, but don't expect the finer points to be transmitted. For business minded individuals, I would hesitate to use it for say video conferencing. Trying to convey detailed text, graphs, or images in general is iffy at best and will require you to hold the image close to the camera. In summary, for the purpose of talking with friends this is a wonderful product.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Color And Light Sensitivity From IceCam2   July 13, 2008

Being Mac compatible, cheap, and driverless under OSX 10.4 and 10.5 isn't good enough. The blue-ISH-green color cast mentioned in another review doesn't make video chat warm and inviting at all - and nothing I did could eliminate it in camera adjustment settings. It's low light sensitivity in the evening at my desk is abysmal. The built in microphone is ok, but sounds a bit harsh compared to my MacBook's built in mic. There's ALOT better webcams for Mac out there than this - it's worth paying a bit more for ALOT better webcam. I regret buying this IceCam2. It's just another cheaply made product - that I'd return but it isn't worth bothering over given the return shipping costs! <- and that pretty much says it all.

4 out of 5 stars Great value   July 4, 2008
This is quite a good camera for the price. I suspect it as good as many cameras costing 2-3 times as much. To get something with significantly better quality and color, one would likely have to pay much more. It's also very easy to use.
