These headphones are perfect for work, traveling, or just when you're trying to sleep in a loud place. The ear-conscious design offers premium comfort, so you can wear them for long stretches without pinching your ears. For added convenience, the built-in monitor switch allows you to hear surrounding sound without taking off the headphones. It passed my tests with flying colors August 3, 2008 After putting the AAA battery into the Sony MDR-NC60, I plugged it into my portable CD player, put a CD into it, put the headphones on and played it without the noise cancellation function on. But then I flipped it on and it was like...WOAH, BABY!!! The ambient noise virtually disappeared, causing the music became much more clearer & the volume of the music to, in fact, actually increase!!! UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!! That gives portable music devices, overall, that much more battery power. And to think Bose charges $350 to $450 for headphones with the same capabilitites? (What's up with that???)
I use these headphones all the time in my media room, which just happens to have a powerful, and noisy, air circulator that used to make it a major pain just to listen to any of my music. They make a HUGE difference!!! The noise virtually disappears!!! I tip my hat to you, Sony!!! You, definatley, gave me my money's worth with my new Sony MDR-NC60 headphones!!!
PS: NOISE CANCELLATION ROCKS!!!
Disappointed July 10, 2008 Sad to say that I too experienced the rumbling while noise canceling was on. Phoned the Sony help line and was given instructions to ship (at my expense) to Texas for exchange. It was received 16 days ago but I have been unable to get further info. I'm sure I will receive the replacement, but it is very disappointing to experience this from a brand I have been loyal to for several decades.
Disapointing June 19, 2008 I'm a huge fan of Sony headphones and favor Sony products in general. To me the Sony MDR-V700DJ are the best sounding headphones ever - especially for bass response. That's why I'm so disappointed with the sound quality of the Sony MDR-NC60 noise canceling headphones. They are very well made and comfortable to wear, but the sound quality is awful - especially when the noise canceling feature is enabled. I recommend a direct comparison with the Bose QuietComfort 2 noise canceling headphones before purchasing these.
Don't buy.... June 17, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought these to replace my NC50s (since they fold and are easier to carry). I think the noise reduction is superior to the 50s, but two separate units both had the hum that many other reviewers have written about (I returned both). You can't be sure that you will get a reliable pair, so avoid purchasing these. Sony, you really need to rework this model and eliminate what is a pervasive problem!
Don't Turn, Turn, Turn. June 17, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have to say, these headphones are super comfortable, and sound great. However, one little quirk - it seems when I turn my head (say I'm resting on the plane and turn one way or the other) I start to notice the throbbing, noise-canceling pulse, and it's pretty darn annoying. Maybe I'm just missing something - but I couldn't figure out how to remedy this. But, for me, not worth replacing, because they are otherwise superb headphones, and I can keep my head forward if necessary.
