5 out of 5 stars Very smooth and precise   October 30, 2008
The bulky and heavy wireless laser mice were making my forearms hurt (mild carpal tunnel), so I decided to go back to the wired variety. It's small, so it fits my hand perfectly, and the mouse is light, so my wrist doesn't hurt when I lift it. It's also very responsive when playing games. The laser tracks on surfaces that optical mice cannot.

I went with the cheaper laser version, because I absolutely refuse to install Logitech's software. It causes so many problems with Vista. I'm using the default Vista driver and it works great. There appears to be 4 buttons that work on this mouse. The fourth is a small button that acts as a back button for IE.

As a side note, I find it very helpful to have a chair with an adjustable arm rest to reduce carpal tunnel. I raise it up so that it's almost even with the surface of the desk. Also, you can increase the sensitivty, so that you make smaller movements with the mouse.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality for the price!   October 18, 2008
This mouse is killer for gaming. The reaction time is great on all accounts for both shooters and MMORPG's (tested in World of Warcraft and City of Heroes/Villains). It's physical movements are smooth over the desk, and it clicks well. The scroll button works like a charm.

To be sure, it's not as spiffy as the super expensive G9 or G5 Logitech puts out, and also misses a lot of those bells and whistles...but it also doesn't cost $60+ for a reason. It doesn't have any extra buttons, which for some macro-intensive games is a bit of a bummer. If I was going competitive, the G9 would probably be a better choice. I'm not, though, and for what I needed - a great general mouse for both gaming and work on the PC, this rocks.

Use a laser mouse and you'll never go back.

I purchased the Logitech Rx1000 about 9 months ago as a gaming and working mouse, and I've got to say, it's performed perfectly thus far.

For gaming, it's wired and it's USB, both pluses for the required instant response time. It has a very high DPI for perfect accuracy and it moves easily without being too light.

For productivity and windows usage, the clicking has a perfect feel, the buttons are in finger-predictable spots, the scroll wheel almost never gets stuck in that in-between spot where just tapping it will force a web page to scroll up & down (If it does get stuck, hold the wheel down hard and scroll up and down a few times, it will fix itself). Sideways scrolling via the scroll wheel is easy, and the scroll-wheel-click is firm but not difficult.

This is the first non-trackball mouse I've owned that doesn't omit that terrible eye-blinding laser you have to watch your kids around. I didn't know that when I purchased it, but now I think I'll never go back. It works so well! It tracks really well on nearly every surface, so I've completely ditched the mouse pad, which I've wanted to do for years. This mouse never "floats" like every one of the older laser mice I've used -- you know, where you put the mouse down on one spot in your desk, and it just mysteriously walks around by itself. That problem is solved here, as well as cleanliness problems had by many other mice, where they have a ridge around the sides that somehow collect any and every piece of dirt from your hands and saves it so that you can never truly clean it. This mouse is almost completely seamless on all sides. On the cleanliness note, I do scrape the mouse-crud from the gliders on the bottom every few months, but they're flat and the gunk scrapes off easily.

One, very small possible downside, is it feels a little different than some mice - it's a different shape - narrower. I have a medium-sized hand, and it feels fine, but I could see someone with much larger hands having trouble. Actually, I think it helps save me from repetitive stress, forcing me to handle it a little differently than my hand is used to, so I would call it a plus for me.

Also - I would NOT recommend installing the Logitech software. The drivers are useless if you have XP, Vista or better (and works fine in Linux), and not installing the drivers disables the completely useless "search button". The button itself is low-profile, but accidentally hitting it a few times will give you a new lesson in anger management.

Overall, I've loved owning the Rx1000 Logitech mouse, and would recommend to everyone I know.

Pros: The scrolling is smooth, but not too smooth. In other words perfect. Side scrolling works well and the speeds can be set.

Cons: The search button cannot be reprogrammed to zoom. The worst thing about this mouse is the middle button, it takes way too much force press down on it.
