 Repetitive Gameplay kills the entire game October 6, 2008

Lost Odyssey has great visuals, especially in the many (and I mean many) movie sequences. In the end however the gameplay is repetitive and you are dragged by the nose the entire story line. The storyline is one big cliché around the central theme of immortal characters, the other themes are the same from every Final Fantasy game from which it borrows the feel and turn based combat style.
Due to the very high quantity of videos it feels like something you are watching rather than playing, and occasionally the game allows you to play through a couple of combats to give you an illusion of interaction. The voice acting (in English at least) is absurdly bad and cheesy, soap opera style, the script of the story doesn't help and the actors must have felt somewhat helpless with the lines they were given (specially the interactions involving the protagonist, who is trying to be far more serious than the rest of the project). The only truly artistic part can be seen in the poems that appear in the form of dreams, although completely devoid of any gaming element they are (some of them) truly well made.
Without spoilers one can only wonder what they were expecting placing characters like the grandchildren in the game. I honestly felt silly through major portions of the story for playing this. The lack of control over saving also makes this a difficult game for the busier player since you cannot be assured that you can play "just another 10 minutes and save". You save when they let you save, you play when the movie is done, and you fight at every six steps. The combat system is the FF turn based we all know but with a timing mechanism of two rings (to create SOME sort of interaction by the player) that while it seems like a good idea it gets boring as hell.
As a final note the steady progression of the opponents makes no sense, at some point you are battling regular soldiers who are still a match to your characters despite the fact that you are 20-30 levels higher since the last time you faced them.
In the end I felt the Lost Odyssey is a childish game they purred a lot of resources in. It isn't worth the time though.

The graphics are excellent all around so let's get that settled right out of the gate. There's some loading time of a few seconds when walking between scenes, but its not terrible.
I like turn-based combat so I thought this would be a good game to buy. Unfortunately the pacing of the combat is too slow to be enjoyable. You cannot skip past the scene at the beginning of every battle and you cannot make the battle animations go faster (as one could with Enchanted Arms). So be prepared to sit thru a whole bunch of combat animations again and again. Overall, the combat is fun and it offers a decent challenge, but Lost Odyssey doesnt do anything new with the combat either.
Annoying are the occasional stealth and "puzzle" missions which are just pointless. They aren't fun and the game would be better off without them.
The story is interesting enough with some nice plot twists (no spoilers will be made here) but the villain is utterly predicable too. Its a shame the story couldnt come up with a better villain.
It really is a 3 star-rating Japanese RPG. You already know if you want this game or not, but I do urge you to wait until the price goes down to 25 bucks since that's what it is worth.

Initially on release I was very excited about this title, I had high hopes for the Mistwalker stable, and despite not being a DragonQuest fan enjoyed my romp through Blue Dragon. On loading the graphics and voice acting were impressive, and I felt that, while sometimes tipping into melodrama, the dreams were a compelling part of the story.
I actually had to stop playing the game when I reached the regenerating worm monster boss (very early on in game play). The combat system irritated me, and after multiple failures (and several heated discussions with my more avid gamer husband) I put the game away. I am not exactly naive to RPGs, have played all the FF games, am a rapid Tri-Ace fan, and have other favorite titles, including the Elder Scrolls series. My personal style does involve some grinding, as with my schedule sometimes if I grind for my hour of gameplay every night for a week, I can complete a major battle without my fingernails gripping the controller and my nerves being overset. This particular title made grinding close to impossible, and I got more frustration than pleasure out of it.
It was visually stunning, however, and I wish that my husband had completed it so that I could have watched, but he had other complaints with the game.

i am a Final Fantasy fan. one of the producer who worked for some of the Final Fantasy series/Square Enix decided to move on his own. So he now works for Mistwalker and created this "Lost Odyssey" for microsoft xbox360. I was well impressed with the amazing story. If you are into Final Fantasy, I recommend you to play this game. Its WORTH IT!!!
