1 out of 5 stars Poor gameplay ruins otherwise okay game.   July 2, 2008
0 out of 3 found this review helpful

Inbetween cutscenes that are forced upon a player and sporadic loading screens that can take anywhere between 5 seconds to a half a minute, low frame rates and cheap RPG elements tend to make the experience of Mass Effect prove "even the good points" of the game to be downright dull. All of the weapons are practically the same, exchanging only a good point or two somewhere between "makes" of guns. The weapon classes are very unbalanced. You are forced to choose between a sniper rifle that overheats after a shot that will not ever steady, an assault rifle that has a 0 in the accuracy category, a shotgun that can basically only be used as a bayonette, and the pistol. The leveling system is supposed to mirror KOTOR, but is very shotty. The player is forced to choose between NPC interaction and looting from a very early point in the game, and if the "auto level" is chosen, could deal with not ever needing to level up ever. This game is a renter at best, but doesn't even qualify for that because the game forces so much time running around doing nothing that the game cannot even be attempted to be played to completion in a regular week. 0 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Play This Movie   June 25, 2008
As usual, Bioware has created an awesome interactive experience. This is less a video game than a movie that you get to interact with. A very long movie. If you've played other Bioware games you will pick up on much of the controller layour and character design stuff intuitively. if not, I don't think that it will be that hard (I can't really say as I tend to play all Bioware titles released).

The plot is great and the explorable galaxies very large. While the it is not a true sandbox type game, you can visit enough differing planets, asteroids, and other planetary bodies and ships to get your fill. Yes, it would have been nice to land on each and every planet in each solar system that you can access. It would have been really nice to be able to visit Earth - just for the fun factor. That said, there's no plot-related reason to hit up all of these planets and I can imagine that the code necessary to support that many planets would get ugly.

Unfortunately, many planets are much the same when visiting in the Mako. The colors are changed and the maps are slightly different but other than that they are maddeningly similar. The first time that you play the game this is really easy to overlook. The second and third time, the tedium gets to you.

The NPC interaction is good and the dialogue offers many response choices - much like other Bioware titles. Plus, if you're looking for a spoiler, you can see some pretty good game lovemaking if you play your cards right. No real nudity. . . It's kind like KOTOR when, if you played everything perfectly, you got to kiss Bastila (although I could never quite recreate that sequence of events in re-plays).

Overall, this game lived up to my pretty high expectations of a Bioware game and blew most other games out of the water. It really is more like interacting in a long, long movie rather than playing a video game - the plot is that good (or not, depending upon your view of movies).

2 out of 5 stars Late to the game.   June 25, 2008
I've played RPG's in the past and know all about "experience points" and over time upgrading your character. Dialog boxes and interaction in this game are inventive and make for an interesting game. Different races you bring on various missions also has a great twist and the varity of controls you have over your "squad" is excellent. With 11 plus hours in this game ultimately it fails because the targeting system, especially for the vehicle that lands on every look-a-like planet is feeble. I can see the blue circle, but it means nothing and the shots fired with the cannon or machine gun don't go anywhere near where you are aiming. This makes the game difficult at the Geth Outpost where rocket launchers and snipers abound (.....no repairs for the vechicle either). If you do manage to wipe everyone out the Geth ship takes you out fast. Starting at the same point over and over with a transport that's akin to Drunken Niko Bellic all the time is no fun either. If I take out 3 or 4 out of 10 enemies how 'bout I only have 7 to 6 guys next time around? I realize all the acne riddled gamers will deride this review, but I just want to continue the game not play the same lame targeting system area over and over. Not looking forward to continuing this game.

4 out of 5 stars Few Complaints   June 22, 2008
I've always played and enjoyed RPGs. When Bioware announced this game, I wasn't that interested, and didn't get interested until after its release. I bought it, but it was on a list of second choices. I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing it. I don't like many shooters, but this one makes it easy for anyone to play, but doesn't hand you an IWIN button. I imagine the gameplay wouldn't be as enjoyable for those who play shooters the most, though.

The Mako, the off-road vehicle you travel the surface of planets in, was fun at first but got repetitive towards the end. However, I did go on every available planet, whether I actually needed to or not, so a lot of the riding around could have been avoided.

I felt the story was solid, and you have plenty of choices to make to develop your character. The paragon/renegade system was nice - new and still serving the same purpose without being contrived. I was occasionally unhappy with the dialogue system, but overall it's a great feature. The conversations felt very cinematic and I wanted to listen to them so it was nice not to have to read my character's dialogue twice while still being able to choose my own words.

Recently my disc was scratched, before I got a chance to play through a second time. I purchased it again, after a month or two of debating, because it was that enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Fascinating Game   June 16, 2008
I am not a big RPG person at all. My RPG history is Evolution, FFVII, FFX, then I played Invisible War (Deus Ex) which I loved and want to do over and over again, but then I got MASS EFFECT! This took Invisible War, upgraded added and refined it. If you are all about action and shooting only, then this is not the game for you. But if you like a great story line, squad based action, great graphics and sound, huge systems to explore and customization. This game will have you riveted.

I highly recommend Mass Effect
