Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Emotionally charged, stunningly beautiful, and delivering unprecedented dramatic Character performance, Heavenly Sword showcases the power of the PS3 system,. A dramatic tale of revenge sees Nariko, a fiery red-haired heroine, embark on a quest for vengeance against an invading King and his army. Thestory builds around the ancient Heavenly Sword, which once belonged to a powerful deity. It can never be wielded by a mortal without it slowly, but inevitably draining their life-force. When the invading King (played by Andy Serkis) destroys the warrior clan that guards the Heavenly Sword, Nariko takes up the sword in a desperate fight for survival. Nariko must now pay the ultimate price as she embarks on one last mission of vengeance against the King and his army before her life is finally and irreparably overtaken by the omnipotent Heavenly Sword.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite PS3 Title   August 2, 2008

This is by far my favorite PS3 game of all time. The acting is top notch, the dialog is superb, the story keeps you interested, the characters are colorful and original, the graphics are stunning, the controls are easy to learn. There is so much about the game I love. You will get attached to the characters. - it's not just a hack n' slash game for the sake of it. You truly get immersed. My favorite bad guy character was Flying Fox. He was so funny! Of course, Nariko kicks major butt and she's not some gratuitously drawn cartoon with ridiculously large bosoms like many of the female protagonists in video games. I played this game twice and it was fun learning more and more of the special combos that Nariko is capable of. This is a truly outstanding game.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful, beautiful game   July 25, 2008

I've never seen a game this beautiful. Background graphics are cinematic and breathtaking. The details are amazing; hairs flowing as the character runs, the clothes wave as the winds blow, and most impressive is the way light reflects and makes shadows on every object and surface in great detail -- just amazing. Almost looks like pre-rendered ray-traced 3D CG animation (it's not) happening on-the-fly as you play. To top it all off, game play is fast-moving and fun with no boring moments. If you have a PS3, this is definitely the game to own to show off its prowess.

3 out of 5 stars Riddle of the Flying Hats!   July 6, 2008
We just purchased this game on Friday, July 4th.

Pros:
Stunning graphics... really top notch!
Great voice acting
Great story line
Interesting use of the hats!

Cons:
Too many "combos" well over 120.
Six axis control is not what it's hyped up to be in this game
Character control is sub par.
Interesting use of the hats!

The graphics and colors are second to none! I have never played a video game before that matches this game in use of color! The scenery and settings are gorgeous. The voice acting is perfect! And although I'm only a couple of hours into the game, the story line so far is truly interesting!

Now the bad part...

To memorize over 120 combinations... which covers all the attacks, defense, stances, etc is more than what many gamers are willing to try to memorize... what works for what, etc!!

The six axis controler needs to be refined considerably.. not sure if this is a problem with the engineering of the controller or the game itself, since this is the first game I've played so far that makes use of motion detection.

Many times you have to use the cone type hats popular among asian agri-workers as a means of hitting multiple targets great distances apart... by bouncing them off a series of gongs! Case in point, I was in a compound high atop a mountain peak and had to throw a hat probably around half a mile or greater to hit a gong with it bouncing back another half mile or so to hit a gong in the compound where I was at... and sometimes you have to do it in a specific order! You actually spend much more time trying to solve the puzzle of hitting these gongs than you do fighting your enemies!

Character control leaves so very much to be desired during the hat throwing. Most times it is difficult to get your heroine positioned properly to throw hats. I DO like the fact that you can do minor mid-course corrections in the trajectory of the hats as it travels out to meet it's target (the camera follows behind the hat as it travels across great spaces to the target gong!) The camera view while following projectiles is spectacular! I love it!

Would I recommend this game to my friends who have the PS3? Yes. Four stars... for both overal and fun... not three.

2 out of 5 stars Beatiful game but not challenging enough   July 1, 2008

I got this game for my new PS3. Let me tell ya, it blows Xbox out of the water. There is no comparison between the 360 and the PS3 other than price of games. Not only does this game look great, but it's really fun to play. I don't know what all the fuss was over the combos and "button mashing" It's the type of game where button mashing can get you through it so many people do it.

I think that's fine for normal or easy, but since this game only has one difficulty mode. While it's really fun to kill all of these bad guys, I wanted more! I didn't die ONCE in this game or even come close to dying!

That upsets me that such a wonderfully done game (and I mean it is designed perfectly from the guided cinematic action sequences to the sixaxis ballistic controls)is so unforgivably easy. Once I learned the combos, I just ruined every bad guy. I don't mean to brag. I don't fancy myself as the Jesus of fighting games, but I am pretty good... also the bad guys would telegraph their intentions so I would have time to react to the one attacking and know what attack that he was doing to me. That made it WAAAYYYY too easy to counter and kill! There should be a mode in which the player doesn't know from which way the attack is coming or what type of attack it is (quick, power, normal).

I think that most people are complaining about the length of game play due to the lack of difficulty of the game. If only there were stronger and smarter enemies to slay...

So to conclude, I only gave this game a bad review because it was too easy. Definitely recommend this game if you have a PS3, but if you're a competent gamer, you won't have any problems with it and would be better off renting it for the weekend.
