Hardcore Gamers May Love It - Casual Gamers May Be Frustrated October 5, 2008 . While I expected something more challenging than Mario Kart (which I love) I was surprised at how frustrating FC can be. My friends are as well. Basically, the learning curve is much more steep - but that's also a reason to consider getting it.
The graphics are nice. You can choose your color, side number and automatic or manual transmission. Not surprisingly, as you progress you get other cars, courses, etc. If you're a Ferrari fan you may want it for that alone. At only $30 - why not?
However, if progressing through the levels and unlocking everything is important, keep reading. I'm a LONG way from achieving that.
Playing the tutorial repeatedly seems vital. It lets you drive a course with a line indicating where you should be at any particular point. Also, it warns you of turns - their shape and distance - then tells you when to brake and accelerate again. You score points for doing things correctly - and lose them if you don't (such as skidding off the track). At the early levels you are racing against the clock. So if you are too timid - to prevent leaving the track in the turns - you'll run out of time and fail.
Practice makes perfect and you'll learn the turns and can anticipate. That makes sense. A real driver would know their course cold. But I'd recommend you use the outside the car view (a la Mario Kart) to see better.
Besides the tutorial, of course, there is racing against the computer - Championship, Practice or Time Trial.
"Championship" is a course, a car and 7 opponents. Initially you only have to finish 6th or better. Your car remains the F430 with the other options per the tutorial. And off you go - beginning in position 8.
With "Practice" - same car options again, but you also chose the number of laps, the number of opponents (up to 7) and difficulty (their skill). Very useful for learning the course as well as exploring tactics against other cars.
With "Time Trial" - you're against the clock.
If the computer is making you look bad, try "versus". I consider "Versus" the best gaming option because you can play other equally inept drivers. Like Mario Kart they don't need to have the game. Honestly, to me, this is the most fun - enjoying your friends bouncing off the barriers and into each other as we all stumble our way around the track. Sure, we MAY become proficient and race more seriously later - but that's later.
For review purposes I'll also mention the "extra" game included. It's a card game where you randomly draw a card that shows a Ferrari and specs. The opponent also draws one. A category is chosen and whomever has the better spec for that category wins the card. I don't find it that interesting - but it's available.
So there you are. The first review and a very basic intro from someone who has only "won" the first two courses at the easy level. Still lots to unlock. The website says 50 cars are in there - somewhere.
If YOU have specific DRIVING tips - something besides "Do the tutorial" - please share them. Mine would be - so far...
1. Use the outside view so you can see the turns coming. 2. Stay with automatic transmission to start. 3. A is go. B is brake. For turns of 45 degrees or more, brake just before the turn. Stay off A in the turn - you turn better. As you exit the turn press A again.
Pros out there... teach me how to do it better. I'm open.
In a nutshell - Hardcore, fast with their fingers, DS gamers might be more entertained. For us casual racers this can have you spending most of your time looking at 7 sets of tail lights.
If it gets too frustrating, find a friend that owns a DS but doesn't have FC, challenge them and laugh as they curse at the first hairpin, then bounce off the wall at the next, then into the woods on the next...
After all, what are friends for? :)
